What did I do? I think I broke my transmission.
The other day I needed to move my car a little bit in the garage. I reached in and disengaged the parking brake and then through the open window grabbed the shifter and put it in neutral without pushing in the clutch. I hear a bad clunk noise. The Shifter moved. It is not in neutral. Stuck in 1st gear. I opened the door, pushed in the clutch. Shifter will not move.
I pushed it out of the garage. Started it up and tried to shift when in motion. NOTHING! What did I do?? Looked under the car this morning. I need someone with me to stay in the car and try and shift the gears so I can look under the car to see what the problem is. I am a novice with transmission problems. Thanks guys. If it were mine, I would jack up the rear and use good jack stands or blocking and block front tires (safety first). Then check if all shifter arms on tranny can be put in nuetral. You might have to unhook linkage. Some shifters have a 1/4 inch hole to insert a 1/4 rod or drill bit to line up nuetral positions of all arms with shifter in nuetral.. You might google this procedure to get aquanted with the mechanics of how it works. As always some google sites are better than others. Good luck and let us know what you find.

I had a Saginaw 4 speed in high school that would 'jam' (stuck in a gear) as the shift rods were sloppy fitting in the shift levers of the tranny.
Once I added shims it was fine. https://www.holley.com/products/driv...packs/parts/11 should not be a big deal |

I had a 3 speed Saginaw that would do that when the shifter got crud in there. The two rods would move together and jam up the gears. You need to get under there and move the rods back into their neutral positions.

Got it fixed. Looks like that it just got bound up from not being lubricated for awhile. I have never lubricated the linkage in 25 years. Some of the bushing do look bad on the linkage. Easy fix if I can find the bushings. Any ideas on where to find them?
It shifts very smooth now. Thanks for the help guys. Easy fix! FB66 |

These are the bushings and clips you want you want to replace the plastic ones that came stock on these cars:
