Default camshaft degree kit

what is it about the pontiac specifuc degree kits vs say the jegs or summit universal kits? would the basic 130kit from jegs do the job?

I use a crank socket, degree wheel and a dial indicator. Magnetic base with extension rods.

Spend the extra coin on getting the biggest diameter wheel you can, especially since it sounds like it’s your first time using one.

It’s worth the added ease and accuratcy , and the latter is why you are doing this procedure in the first place!

Only put number 1 piston in if your at that point and you will have far better control of the crank rotation.

On a side note here, do you know how to rotate pictures on your phone or Ipad before you put them up to a web site, or is it your intention to have your car’s picture 90 degrees off?

It’s a easy 3 step process.

I just went through this with a customer. The problem with "kits" is none are designed for a Pontiac. Most of it won't "bolt on" to
a Pontiac..... Buy a nice degree wheel. Forty years ago I bought the Ford Motorsports and it was a perfect choice. Buy a magnetic base and indicator. Now you only need to make a pointer and figure out a way to read the cam lobe motion. For years I used modified lifters. If you do a lot of them it's definitely worth buying the lifters tool with changeable ends for FT & roller.

Anyone building an engine can justify the expense of a nice magnetic base.

thats my plan, at doing just one cylinder. i have 3 motors to put together, 462, 467, 406. you ate right, this is my first time cam degreeing. dot to dot always worked ok for me but i kinda want to go the extra mile since im still not in a huge hurry for a motor.

as for the picture, you hate it, i hate it everyone hates it but....the picture was oriented right when i loaded it...i dont know why this site flipped it...honrestly im gonna have to blame py for this lol.

edit: ill have guys know i dont take pics of the car sideways.....tgis site flips them....i spent 5 minutes flipping this pic around. if i pre flip it, it loads flipped. if i put it upright it goes flipped. i think i just got lucky this time

i

I just use that Pro Form tool that comes with dial indicator, a Summit brand degree wheel and that Comp crankshaft socket and a piece of bailing wire for the indicator. I made my own piston stop out of a piece of flat bar steel.
The Moroso balancer/installer puller is nice. Have one but this Jegs kit is far cheaper and will get the job done.

"Cam lobe attachment" or fixturing my gauge to the lifter has been the tough part for me. My last degree effort did not finish.
