I know this has been bounced around a few times so can someone point me to the choices for rear drum performance parts for a 1971 GTO?

I upgraded my 1976 rear 9 1/2" drums to 11" drums from a mid 70's A body, 1973-1977 Lemans.

Yeah that seems rather pricey for a set of shoes, pair of wheel cylinders & a hardware kit... they must be some special compound & special wheel cylinders.
Would think the bigger 11" OEM drum set up would stop almost as good for a lot less $$?? |

I looked for the 11" conversion kit but it does not appear that anyone still sells them. Is this something I can piece together?

Dont think anyone sells a specific conversion kit but there may be some out there... can also locate used or new backing plates then buy new parts like drums, shoes & hrdwr kit.

On these cars, over 70% of the braking occurs in the front. The only brake upgrades in the rear that are really necessary would be from a repeatability standpoint. At that point, unless you had some weird rules package you had to follow, you would upgrade to disc brakes.
If this car is a cruiser and will never see repeated panic stops like in a road course or auto-x situation, spending more dollars to upgrade OE drums to a more performance or bigger drum is just wasted money. Buy good quality OE replacement shoes and parts. Any money left over can go elsewhere on the car.

I used to have motorcycle shoes relined in the UK with aggressive compounds, it wasn't cheap. The compound material itself is expensive.

Link that's $200 less for semi metallic shoes from PowerStop brand :
https://www.carparts.com/details/Pon...s&gad_source=7 Even if you buy a hardware kit, and quality wheel cyls ( Raybestos $47 ) you're way under $100. I've used PowerStop parts (Kit with slotted rotors and pads), and lining on my own cars and trucks, and have found it perfectly acceptable for towing, and performance street driving. Under $30 you could give it a try.

I got all of the parts that fit a 1977 Lemans, I used to have a 1977 Can Am. I also put on 1LE rotors, 12", and B car spindles, that were also on that Can Am. So I upgraded all the way around on my Firebird.

I was looking for some other parts in totes in my shop the other day and found I had saved the backing plates from a 1977 Monte Carlo with the complete brake assembly still attached - I got them 30 years ago to put on a 1973 Cutlass I ended up getting rid of for lack of available body parts. My set of the 1977 still had the Parking Brake Lever (with the cable cut) and the Parking Brake Strut still attached! Wheel cylinders, spring kits are available through any parts store, drums become an issue because there were two different ones with the 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern and they both fit, one is a heavy duty drum which are getting harder to find - they are slightly wider with better cooling fins - these are the drums that came on the 1977 MC so I searched to find them. AC Delco 18B28 or Raybestos 2087R. Hope this helps! |
