Hi. A friend of mine is moving a 1976 MG to NC. Being an older car Ga does not issue a title anymore. They use the bill of sale to show as proof of ownership. It looks like he would have an inspection at the State Police dept and then be able to register the car. Other people have told him he can not take the car into NC. I don’t believe that. Has anyone done this move or have any insight. Just looking for info and what to expect before he gets there. Thanks.

You can register any vehicle that comes from a non title state in a title state. Whoever claims you can't is full of it.

Call NC DMV and ask
doesnt matter what anyone here says right ,wrong or indifferent, its the state of NC that matters. Theres tales of people going to jail over title washing,BOS was sometimes part of that scheme.

Yes, he will contact the state DMV, the only way to get it done is through them! Just seeing if anyone had been through the process.

Your friend needs to make personal contact at the MVD office that will issue the new title, registration, plates and find out specifically what he needs to bring when he visits so he has it in hand when he does. Jim

Im trying to understand the chain of custody with a BOS vs a real title.
Wasnt there a case of a Shelby or maybe it was a Mustang that was stolen and they happen to catch it going into a shipping container 40 yrs later? Ive rebuilt cars that title was scrapped and new title was state issued. DMV checked that all parts used to build it were legit before the new title was issued. And at least in my case I got a receipt with VIN from the wrecking yard.It has to be this way to protect from chop shops.

What I'm going to pass along is what I've learned as a shop owner in N.C. and dealing with DMV inspectors. So, for FWIW:
He can certainly bring the car into N.C. At that point, he needs to take what papers he has and go to his local DMV office. They will not issue a title or register it until it has been physically inspected at his location by a DMV inspector. This not a safety inspection, it's about stolen cars. Bald tires and missing lights do not matter. It doesn't have to start and run. The VIN that is on it will be checked in a stolen car database. In the end, it will have a state issued VIN tag attached to the driver's door jamb on a follow up DMV inspector visit. There may also be a bond requirement put on it. It cannot be insured or driven until all of those hoops are jumped through. IF he had a Ga. title, they will still perform a physical inspection of the numbers before issuing an NC title because it is an out of state car. In person DMV wait times are completely ridiculous because of short staffing and people wanting a Real ID. One of my employees was there for 6 hours last week, and it's a statewide problem. He will know in a few weeks when he gets moved. I guess the big issue is Georgia will not issue a title on vehicles after a certain year. Even my 67 LeMans has a replacement title, but they don’t issue those for cars after a certain point now. I assume when you buy a car and tag it with the BOS, the VIN gets checked. I will post what he finds and how it goes. Thanks

If it's really a problem he can request a title from GA. When I registered my 67 Firebird there they told me no title was necessary but I told them I wanted one so they gave me one. May have been a charge for it but don't remember.
