Default One Inch Carb Spacer

May be buying a one inch open carb spacer for my 66 Lemans - 462, 310 KREs, OF HR, Torker 2.

With open spacers, does the brand matter? Are there design differences across brands making one better than the other?

The car arrived to me with a Mr Gasket one inch open spacer. Will that be as good as any other?

What do you have for a carb?

How tall of an air cleaner do you have?

Many times when a too small restrictive air cleaner is replace with a bigger one more overall power is produced where as the power increase of a spacer only shows up within 600 rpm of peak HP.

Can you get a 4” tall filter element on top of the carb?
3” is the minimum for a motor like that.

Have you had the car to a track yet?

Hi Steve - the carb is a Holley 850 DP (4781-5). I hope to get a 14x3” air filter in it. It hasn’t been driven yet.

Thanks for the offer, Dave but I already have the Mr. Gasket 1" that came with the car and just wanted to know if all open spacers are basically the same, functionally. No one responded to that, though the info Steve provided is worth considering for sure!

Your engine won't care what brand it is. A one inch spacer is a one inch spacer. There are some that do not transfer as much heat to the carb but other than that use what you have. Easy 20hp on that Torker 2. My cheap one inch spacer runs virtually identical to a Wilson tapered 4 hole spacer that is 5 times the money.

You might want to watch some dyno testing videos on these spacers before you say the brand does not matter.
30 lbs torque over another good spacer is worth it IMO.

As mentioned already, a one inch open spacer is a one inch open spacer.

The material it’s made of is either going to transfer heat to the carburetor or insulate it from the heat, choose whichever one you prefer.

No people, a one inch open spacer is not a 1 inch open spacer. Did anyone watch the videos ?
This spacer right here is a type of a 1 inch open spacer. And it made almost 30 ft lbs more torque than another spacer.
Myself, I took my 1" Super Sucker of my old 455 HO. It had a Warrior. I have tested a few intakes and carbs at the drag strip. When I put my old Moroso plastic 1" open spacer I lost most of a tenth in ET and it was aluminum. Did nothing for the heat transfer.
This Polymer Racing 1" spacer made the extra torque upside down in the tests.

Just relating to what a generic one inch spacer is worth for hp on the OP engine combination. I agree with your post though..some spacers are worth a little more hp or torque..but I struggle to accept "marketing" dyno tests. Each engine combination will respond differently as well a given hp increase on one engine combination will not necessarily be an increase on another.

Seems to me that the Spacer can be rendered moot when the fella grinds the Plenum ceiling to blend well with each runner.

If a part works better when installed upside down I'm thinking it's a bass ackwards design.

Spacers need to be track tested. No dyno in the world can simulate the car moving down the track.

With one of my cars when it ran right around 11.0 it worked best with a four hole tapered spacer. It slowed down with a square open spacer. Later on when the power increased and the car ran in the 10.7 range the square open spacer was faster that the tapered four hole. The gains and losses were around .05-.07. This was using a ported T2

Well, I have 2 of those polymer Racing spacers. A 1" tapered 4150 and a 2" 4500.
I am going to buy that 4150 in the video and try it both ways at the track.
See what happens. I kinda enjoy playing around with this stuff.

I've seen the spacers with the dimples before, they've been around a while. Same principle and reason golf balls have dimples. I've never tried one though.

I'd be interested in experimenting with one, just haven't gotten around to it.

As far as spacers go on single plane intakes, both on the dyno and at the track, I've always had best luck with the 4 hole taper spacers, super suckers, what ever you want to call them. They've worked and provide gains on everything I've tried them on from little 327's to larger 570+ CI engines as long as I was running a single plane intake. I usually run the 1.5" or 2" version.

I've never had any luck with them on a dual plane intake. In those instances I find gains with open spacers.

Either way they are worth spending a little money on different designs and experimenting. Very easy to swap around on the dyno and at the track.

For the OP the difference between his generic one inch open spacer that he has and any other one inch spacer is minimal horsepower. The big gain is putting a one inch spacer on that Torker 2. 20 hp my estimate for minimal investment.

More on the Polymer racing spacers.

I run that exact spacer.
This guy says he made 13 HP over a 1" Super Sucker on a Ford 347.

More, this guy say he made 21 HP over a Wilson tapered spacer on a 408 sbc.

Its becoming more clear, these things work.
