I have been on the quest to find the original build sheet in a 67 GP Convertible, last winter we had the dash apart to fix a few things, and the rear seat out. They weren't in either. Also wasn't on the bottom side of the driver seat which was also out.

Where are other locations that these were hidden at?

Inside the driver door panel, sometimes on top of gas tank.

Under the carpet.

They are used in all the remote areas of the plant where parts are build up and conveyed to the main line, including the seat cushion room, the tire/wheel bay, the axle build areas, the chassis line, body weld shop and trim.

That's why you tend to find them on top of the fuel tank. under the carpet, above the headliner, under the dash, behind the A pillar, or built up into the seat.

The sheets were not "placed" there, as much as they were "left" there. They were supposed to be gathered up and thrown away like extra screws, coffee cups, love notes, etc, but sometimes it was easier (or necessary) to just leave them where they lay.

I've only found one in all my collector vehicles: on top of the fuel tank of my Pontiac Michigan built GTO.

We still use build sheets taped to the vehicle to build products today.

Thank you, I don't recall there being anything under the carpet on the driver half when we had the driver seat out, and nothing behind a pillar, inside of dash, and no headliner in a drop top! Need to get the driver door panel off soon to work on a door latch so i can only hope.

I have found buildsheets inside the front fenders (above the wheel tub) on two fullsized 69's. One built in Kansas City and the other in the home plant (Pontiac)

Makes sense.

Front end sheet metal was built up remotely and conveyed to the main line in sequence.

My Kansas City car (an executive) has so far produced three build sheets! In a front fender, top of the gas tank and under side of front bench seat.

My 71 Catalina had one above the gas Tank, I found one behind the front passenger door panel on my fathers 78 Catalina Safari, but it also had a large "Rework" sticker applied to the inner door from, no explination on what needed to be reworked.

My Doraville '72 Grandville had a build sheet just laying underneath the passenger power split-bench seat in perfect condition. The original owner said he watched the dealer prep his special order car and when the guy found the sheet he made them give it to him so he could keep it (it looks brand new +50 years later). My '74 & '71 Southgate and '73 Pontiac plant didn't have one anywhere I could find - gas tank or elsewhere - nor any evidence one had ever been there. I believe the '67 Executive wagon's build sheet was taped to the gas tank. I had a '67 Bonneville with no evidence of one either.

My personal feelings... it seems the A & F body cars got considerably less scrutiny by the dealers for cleaning and prep compared to the B body cars, and probably less concern by the guys on the line for tossing them or catching the hiddens and tossing them. Fremont seems to be the plant that I've found the most in out of any given car I've had. I suspect the guys working the line would leave them in more regularly if the shift supervisors didn't grill them or scrutinize their work, or if they were just younger and lazier, or overworked because the line was flying building a car a minute. Which explains why sometimes you'd get 3-4 sheets for different cars all bunched up inside somewhere.

And to piggyback what Keith said, I've found build instruction sheets in my '86 Buick, my '02 Saturn, and even found a piece of what was a taped sheet in a rental Pontiac G6 above the glove box inside the dash. Sometimes the ways of the past are the most elegant and simple ways to continue building something even today.

My first new car, a 1993 Bonneville, built in Doraville iirc, had the build sheet rolled up and tucked into a hole on the inner trunk lid sheet metal.
