Default Basic question regarding distributor and ignition sequence

It's been a long week and my brain isn't computing today.

73 400 - Installing distributor........#1 is set at TDC. Rotor tip pointing at #1.

Why are all the reference drawings showing #1 is at the firewall? One mentioned rotor should be pointing at the driver seat.

At the firewall or at the driver seat is not at #1. Right?

Thanks for the enlightenment.

I'm thinking its pointed toward driver side because of the vacuum can where there is room. Haven't said that you can put #1 where every location you want it. You would just have to drop the distributor in at the location u want. Meaning the rotor can then point at whatever location you choose. Just remember as you said TDC #1 plug is located on the compression stroke.

The distributor can be inserted into the block in darn near any position. The caveat is: the #1 plug should be inserted where the rotor is pointing when the engine is on the timing mark at TDC on the compression stroke.

The best location is where the vacuum can has room to move to be able to adjust timing without the can hitting the firewall. The best location is probably shown in the manual. It's figured out for you already.

I time my engine off # 6. That way I can have some marks on the firewall where my tit on the vacuum bulb can point to it.

I generally place the dist. in the block with the Vac. Adv hose nipple approx. parallel to the firewall. That puts the Points window on the right side in an area you can access. Don't forget once #1 is established, the firing order is COUNTER clockwise.

Set the timing mark on the balancer at 12 before TDC. Then drop the distributor in with rotor pointing dead on #1 on the cap.
