Back in the Vietnam wars days, a soldier could order a new car through a Goverment program. It could be delivered to Hawaii for his his 30 day annual leave. He could then have it shipped back to the states for about $80.

I have a 69 Firebird that has a history that was a variation on this. Car was ordered in San Francisco by an independent car rental company in Honolulu. (They ordered them in California and shipped them in because the GM dealers in Hawaii had a monopoly and priced accordingly-they still do). In 1970 after 18 months service they put it for sale on their own selling lot right next to the airport. A navy tuber bought it and used it while he was stationed at Pearl for two years before having it shipped home to Paradise in Northern California where he kept it until I bought it from him about 7 years ago. Last bit was that a week after I bought it the garage it had been stored in for decades burnt to the ground during the 2018 wildfire there.

James Zukerkorn, president of Kapiolani Motors, Ltd., and that company, the sole Pontiac dealer on the Island of Oahu since 1939,
and operating under a Dealer Selling Agreement with the defendant General Motors Corporation, have brought this complaint for money damages against General Motors and its General Motors Overseas Distributors Corporation, claiming that the two defendants conspired with Ford Motor Company, Inc. and Mike Salta Pontiac Incorporated to eliminate Kapiolani Motors from the Oahu Pontiac market. This might have been the dealer? |

This was still going on when I was in Fallujah, Iraq 19 years ago. Only it wasn't a government program. You could order your car through a broker at the local MCX at a discount. It would be delivered to your hometown dealer when you rotated back to the states. Motorcycles were included too. IIRC, Harley had their own sales representative that floated between the bases. .

They were the only Pontiac dealer on the island for decades. They received the very first 57 Bonneville.

My 69 400HO bird convertible was ordered in a similar fashion by its original owner in nov 68. He was stationed in Germany and ordered the car at a German GM dealership. He took delivery at Boas Pontiac in San Fran a few months later when he went back to civilian life. I’ve got all the paperwork, looks like he paid about 20% off sticker. Better than the typical 10-15% you could squeeze out of a dealer back then.

Sounds reasonable? I'll add it there and Kapiolani is already at 40 225 (plus another a few numbers away)

They were well located, right across the street from Ala Moana mall, then the largest mall in the world.
