I think this decodes as a 1972 M20. Based on the partial VIN, what would this transmission have been out of?

Posting to help members in the future;
The following image has two distinct stamped codes; One is what might be called the transmission ID code, the other is the partial vin to verify it as being original equipment (for warranty purposes). P2D14A = tranmission ID code P = Muncie-4spd (source plant) 2 = model year (1972) D = month of assembly completion (April) 14 = date of assembly completion A = gear set (wide ratio "M20"; IIRC B/M21 & C/M22) 12S828288 = partial vin code 1 = Division code (Chevrolet) 2 = model year (1972) S = assembly plant code (previously mentioned as Corvette; N/Norwood; Z/Fremont; ect) (last 6 digits) = final six digits of vehicle vin number I hope this helps

Thanks for the information.
In Post#4, below yours, can you help explain how to decifer the other numbers, off the trans case, the side plate, & the tail shaft? I am totally new at this as far as being able to know what the various sequences of numbers represent on each of the componet pieces. Thanks again for helping an ol guy get educated!! This is more complex than being in "school"! |

WOW! Lots of information there.
Thank you so much. I printed all of it to have as a reference. Allan Everything points to a '66-'67 , which is what previous owner said, & also gave me receipts for the parts on the rebuild. Done about 18 months ago, and only driven maybe 1,000 miles. My plan is to sell it, since I got the Tremec, but wanted to be able to give a buyer, the correct information about it. Thank so much for the help, it is greatly apprecited! |

those other numbers are casting numbers;
They were used at the foundry to identify the part; Post casting, all parts needed finish machining. Muncie part numbers are great to identify if a transmission has been apart.
