I just joined this forum a week ago (said my hello's in The Lobby) and I'm hoping to join the Trans Am owners club shortly (I owned a 1975 and 1979 Anniv. cars previously). I'm now looking at a 1973 TA which is not numbers matching, but the engine has my baffled. It's a 485428 block (still to be confirmed) but the stamp pad on the front shows 210982 (car VIN ends with 102942). Also a YA underneath and a larger 03 stamped alongside the YA. Except the "3" in the 03 is backwards, so it looks like a 30 upside down. Can anyone tell me when the 210982 was stamped and possibly from what car?

210982 is the Engine Unit Number or 'Serial Number'. It is stamped when the engine is built at the Pontiac engine assembly plant.

It has nothing to do with the VIN which is located near the passenger side Timing Cover. The VIN is stamped at the vehicle assembly plant.

Thanks. Just to clarify, the 210982 is the number on the stamp pad on the passenger side next to the timing cover. On a numbers matching car, this would match to the last 6 digits of the VIN, correct? They are over 100,000 units apart so I'm wondering where this block is from. I doubt they made that many 455's since 1973.

The engine VIN will be down lower on block next to timing cover and under the Radiator hose outlet.

Your should have a 23N before the last 6 digits of the VIN.


The 210982 sounds like as what was posted, the EUN.
Below it would be the engine code, which sounds like YA that you posted
Which if it is a 1973 engine would be a 455 with Unitized distributor.
