On my GTO, the PO applied the fender decals within the reference area the manual calls for, but crooked. It always bugged me but not enough to try doing anything until I had time to research decal removal and application enough to not risk damaging the paint.

It seems the Pontiac assembly manual only gives reference measurements for the placement. The problem I see is that the vertical measurement, being from the fender crease coming down, is a poor method for location in that direction due to there being a subtle arch to the crease. If the decal were applied without the benefit of a fixture or jig, the "level-ness" of the decal is at the mercy of the line worker's eye. The horizontal reference coming from the door opening edge was not a problem.

My solution was to use a laser level like that used to install kitchen cabinets to apply the decals on a line parallel to the lower rocker panels. I mounted the laser to a tripod and set it level to the rockers. Then it was just a case of cranking the mount up so the laser line was level to where the original decals had been and then placing painter's tape guides for the new decal. Once that was done, I could remove the old decal and clean the area prior to installing the new decal.

The important part was to use a human hair dryer instead of a heat gun. I also monitored the surface temps of the fender with a thermal heat gun I have. When the surface got just over 100 degrees, the vinyl decals could be started with a fingernail. When enough was lifted, I held tension only on the decal with long-nose needle nose pliers, while concentrating the heat on the glued area of the decal that was releasing from the fender. With tension only, you can feel the glue letting go as the heat hits it. It's that release of the glue that determines the speed of removal - you have no say in the matter.

Once removed, the area was cleaned with Goo Gone and then an alcohol wipe, followed by a buff dry with a clean terry cloth towel. The decals applied easily and the result is just what I was looking for.

I did the same for the rear fender.
As numerous threads have noted, 68 decals seem to be all over the place even from the factory.

I didn't have any reference except for some old photos I took in the early 80s. Based on these old photos and the actual measurement of the arrowhead lens, I was able to guesstimate the vertical and horizontal distance from letter 'O' to the lens. This was a Fremont car.
I used NOS decals

Preliminary step; The front and rear of the Rocker panel was level with the floor.
After installation, I noted the bottom of the lettering lined up with the top of the rear fender opening.

Installed the pilot bearing (not bushing) for my recent build. Hopefully the bolts for the new flywheel and clutch will show up tomorrow or Tuesday so I can get it all ready for installation into the car.

Installed Tasmanian Devil floor mats.

Drove it and did a little burnout in honor of Taz.

Because it was the right thing to do.

I'm in the process of resuscitating my fuel system upgrade. I started last fall but was thwarted by the Flu then winter. I went out today and assessed my situation. I'm about half way there but right now I'm also dealing with the urgency of post winter clean up and spring time chores on the property. I have mulch and soil coming and some other things. But. I'm getting closer. LOL.

Here in Portugal almost all your tax/fiscal stuff is lumped into one place. My insurance agent noticed that an annual fee of 992€ for the Pontiac was due 18 Abril - eep! He also noted the amount should be a lot less as the Pontiac is registered as a "car of interest".

Drove it to the Portugeuse tax authority in Palmela (the one much closer in Montijo has some notoriously rude workers). The nice gal there noted the error and zeroed out the amount due.

Wish I could post videos here. The upholstery shop sent me a great video of the progress on my ‘55 Catalina. It should be done by March. Headliner looks outstanding.

Changed the fuel filter on the 75 Formula I got last summer.

It was nasty. I asked my buddy who I got the car for and had it for over 10 years and he said he never changed it so who knows when it was last changed.

Also swapped out the lock and gas cap with a stock cap. The last one was a pain in the butt.

Given the rising price of gas I would not throw that locking cap away...
