I did get a black jack mechanism, and assumed that that one was matched to the black painted (and decal-ed) attachment for the 79-81 front end.

The '71 VN jack would be the same as the '70 VN jack. It is just the supplier that Van Nuys used. I have seen the same jack in Fremont built A-bodies. Below are pictures of the three jacks side by side, the three bases side by side, and some close ups of the mechanisms. From left to right I bring you - the '70 Norwood jack, the '71-'72 Norwood "Y" style jack, and the '70-'71 Van Nuys jack. The '70 Norwood base is stamped U70 and you can see the date code on the Norwood '70 mechanism on the rivit. These are in their original paint and rust. Hope this helps.

Have several jacks of the style 68bird400HO refers to as the "70 Norwood jack"
-their mechanism is painted BLACK, & the square jack tubes are 34" long.

Trying to confirm this style jack as '73 Norwood build jacks.
The three in this first load of bumper jacks all date '73 Firebirds. Have one '73 as a project, & have parted quite a few more.

The jack mechanisms in my early '80, as well as my parents early '80 & their '79 (Norwalk build) were all painted a corporate blue. The base in both of the '80's was corporate blue.

Lots , probably 15,000, of left over 1972 Jacks for F bodies at sub assembly in the beginning of the '73 production. Just something to consider, these would not get wasted.

Definitely! When Norwood resumed production after the strike in early October( of 72, those jacks would have been used in earliest '73 model builds.

The earliest of the square tube/black finished F-body jacks I have is dated M2.
Jack out of my '73 BG project is the same style, assembled in May '73, jack is dated C3

Cked the jack out of my '80, no date on the rivet, either.

The jack mast is how long on the jack in question?
Bottom 2 inches are trapezoidal in shape?
With the jack mechanism flipped with the handle attachment area to the left & hook to the right, is there a letter stamping above the two holes stamped in the side of the stamped mechanism?

Just adding a picture of the jack in my '73 Formula. Mast is approx. 34-1/4" long. Rivet date is 3G. Base is black (stamped U) and handle is gray. Long sleeve.

Resurrecting this thread as I am seeking info on any early 2nd gen Firebirds with a jack mounted across the top of trunk for the space saver spare tireoption as illustrated in the assembly manual.

Every photo I come across seems to have the jack diagonal like full size spare tires would mount on.

Does the across the top of the trunk floor jack mounting location exist -- and can anyone share any pics with their space saver mounted on it?

Curious to see if jack was mounted across the back as the assembly manual shows. Have never had the opportunity to see one.

Yes, it’s mounted across the back left to right and you’ll see brackets welded up high near the backseat support
