Default HORN & DASH LIGHTS

In my '66 GTO, the horn doesn't work, nor do the dash lights.

Could they be on the same circuit, or fuse?

Can someone provide the best sequence to check the horn? Stock steering wheel.

And best sequence to check dash lights?

And I'm just an 'OL Shade Tree mechanic (79), and have a hard time getting under the dash, and a harder time getting out...Might make a good U-Tube comedy!

Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem crawling in and out (78). First ground the wire from the horn relay to the bottom of the column. Horns? in the column. Probably at the wheel. If it doesn't honk check to see if it honks by grounding wire at the relay. No honk check for 12 volts at relay. If you have 12 volts in check for 12 volts out to horns. If 12 volts out then check for 12 volts at the horns. Jump 12 volts from battery and see if they CAN work. 2nd, dash lights. Check dash light fuse. good/bad? Check "parking light" fuse it feeds the dash light fuse. After that I'm afraid you are going to have to get under the dash and inspect the headlight switch. The rheostat may be bad.

Just fixed the same situation on a new-to-me 68 Bonneville.

Both horns were shot. Everything else in the horn circuit worked. I fixed it prior to reading this thread but a previous poster's steps for this sounded good.

Also, the headlight switch was screwed up AND the short little fuse in the fuse panel was blown. Getting the headlight switch out was easier than I expected. Find the release button for the shaft/knob and then it can be removed with only a little more trouble.

Of course, your milage may vary.

Check if the horn relay clicks when the horn button is pushed for starters. If the relay clicks, chances are it's bad horns, but you would need to verify they were getting power before condemning them. As far as the dash lights, try rotating the dimmer on the headlight switch back and forth a few times, sometimes it's just a little corrosion in the switch that can be cleaned up. If it's not the dimmer, before checking anything else make sure the taillights work when you turn the lights on. The dash lights are powered by the tail circuit, so if the taillight fuse is blown, the dash lights go out at the same time. Report back with your findings.
