Default 2nd outing with high ports

Everything went good except valve cover gaskets move and covered the engine compartment with oil. Won first round but decided to not go up for second round, way to much oil leaking. Going to try spacer instead of doubling up gaskets.

Performance wise very happy. 9.90/134. Foot braked the car. 60's where 1.38 where trans brake gets me 1.35. 78 degrees 1200' da. 32 deg timing. 200lbs of ballast, small 850 carb and 3" tail pipes with resonators. Buddies say they can't hear the car at the line. Can't really compare to race gas and e-heads last year. Have a little smaller cam but more lift and tail pipes instead of dumps.

Wanted to run 10,00's in the summer on pump gas. I think I reached that goal. Now have to decide if I want to put my 1.5 rockers to slow it up a little. Bring lift from .693 to .620.

Sneaking up on the gas, ran 5 gallons of 93 with 1 gallon of c-12. Eventually getting to staight 93.

You fixed that quickly.

Won't it slow up as it gets warmer?

Nice!
Why not just glue the gaskets?

Advantages of being retired, have a lot of time. Yes it will slow up in the summer, but I am going to be faster leaving with the trans brake on the pro tree. I did glue the gaskets together and to the valve covers, but it seems like the glue didn't hold to good or gaskets were to flimsy.

Next month I am going to take all the weight out put the 1050 on and bypass the tail pipes and run it all out to the 1/8. Can't go the 1/4 too much gear (4.10). Right now. I am crossing the line at 6800 at 134mph. I need one more gear, Mabey a gear venders in the future.

Good getting sorted out.
Why not taller valve covers?
After all spent on heads and everything else etc.
Just wondering....

To remind us:

330 cfm eheads with more duration to
as cast High ports, less duration with more lift.

Correct?

Correct. Little bowel clean up on the high ports. Lowered compression from 11.8-1 to 11-1 and added 3" tail pipes. went from a 20 year old roller (278/282 at 108ls) to a modern lobe ramp (268/278 at 110ls).

Wallace calculator says I made 700hp with new combination at 3450 race weight. Old combination calculated to 690hp. Everyone thinks I am nuts for spending all this money and time to switch to pump gas. I want to enjoy the car on the street more (local cruises and shows). All my local tracks closed up. Closest one is 1 1/2 away. Went from racing 8 times a month down to 1 or 2. A few buddies got out of racing entirely since the closing of Atco.

Looking at fabbed valve covers, dam they got pricey. Kind of like the old school look.

I use a 0.75" valve cover spacer RTV'd to the head and no sealant on the valve cover gasket and have no leaks.

If you get fabbed valve covers I would get the kind with bolts on the bottom rail and the half circle cutouts. I have some cheap fabbed valve covers from Amazon with the bolts on top. So the rail is towards the inside and there is that lip/rail and it holds oil. Makes it easier to leak on the rear of the valve covers. I had to put some #2 Pematex or a little RTV under the gaskets on the bottom/rear to stop drips.
9s on pump gas is a good place to be, congratulations.
Now Paul.................. have you gotten around to making those sweet valve covers ?

I have some spacers for sale if you want them. They are 1" spacers polished alum.

i Could go $50 on them and they are brand new.

3/4" valve cover spacers siliconed to the heads and cork gaskets under the valve cover. No more leaks. Lost a 1.5 quarts of oil, had a real mess to clean up.
Third outing was a 10.0 index race. Had 260lbs of ballast (putting me at 3460lb race weight) and a restrictor plate under the 850. Plate was equal to a 750 throttle plate. Didn't make the 32 car field. Ran a 9.961 letting off (128mph). Qualified 34. Da was 450'. Used the trans brake for the first time with new combo, 1.321. Best with old combo was 1.35.
Going to be a challenge slowing the car in good air.

Running 100% 94 octane pump gas now.

Seems you car runs about as good as it did with E heads on race gas vs your High Ports and pump gas. Better 60 foots, nice.
Might have to find a 750 DP to slow down !
Even though you had a few bumps the experience has been a positive one.
BTW, since the pump gas here is 91 I have to make my own 94 octane. Still call it pump gas though.
