I have a remote filter on my stroked 400 so that I could fit a bigger filter away from the heat of the headers. I have used K&N on there but have heard nasties about those also!!!

Bringing back this old post to show a wix 51258 that I recently got from summit (April 2026), compared to one bought 2 years ago.
New one is shorter, I don’t know anything about the internals.

Ive just recently broken in 2 engines with a series of several oil changes between the both of them, cutting the filters open every time for obvious reasons.
Ive cut open about 8 filter now over the course of the last couple months. Cutting another one this morning as a matter of fact. They have all been wix filters and none of them have changed at all. Ive bought from 2 different places depending on where I was running around town at the time picking up filters. The gold from Napa and mixed that with a few wix from O'Reilly's as well. They have been identical. Ive seen no difference in them as of a week ago. The one I'm cutting this morning is a wix from oreilly. Maybe Arizona has a vast supply of the "gooder" version??? Lol I don't know Im just stating what I'm seeing where I'm at. |

I do like the side shot showing the height difference. That's new, something I have not seen here so far either.
Just for people reading this, those are the wix filters hence the part number with the 5 in front. The Napa gold is the same but Napa drops the 5 and just calls it a 1258. I'll measure the ones I have on the shelf this morning. Any chance you have a shot with a tape measure? I won't know if mine matches your tall one or short one cause mine are all the same. |

Thanks Singleton, looks like a bigger difference in the picture. I measured mine and it's 4.25"
Just a side note, the recent ones I bought from oreilly and napa all still say made in usa as well. Not that it means much these days but I have not seen the china ones that some have reported. If I do I'll be cutting that open to compare. Another interesting note, my son has been buying K&N filters for his bug engine, which takes a Ford filter. I've cut a couple of those open recently, those things are robust. The case is much thicker and takes longer to cut through. Construction inside I'd say is maybe a little better, still the same principle, filter element was tougher than the wix when I was pulling the pleets apart. |

As much as I hate to admit this, I am beginning to see some quality issues starting to pop up with WIX and NAPA Gold filters. Just yesterday I installed 7356 filter in a Honda application. The center plate, (where the threads are), were not centered in the filter body. It had an 1/8" or a little more runnout and I was concerned the seal might leak where it fits to the engine block or adapter. So I had to install it and then carefully leak check the area before putting all the plastic pieces back on underneath. When buying a premium filter, and paying premium prices, you shouldn't have to worry about stupid things like this. I am at least going to keep a mental note of this and give them a little more time to get their act together. But I am not pleased. About a year ago, I had another NAPA Gold/Wix filter that did NOT HAVE any threads in the base at all!. A little hard to use that one!. I do about 4-5 oil changes every week.

The black filter was purchased last fall, the white filter was found cleaning my garage this winter. Not sure how old the white filter is, I'm guessing it's from the '90s,not much has changed between the two.

After reading this I grabbed a couple old 1248 Napa filters I have hanging around. I bought the Gold earlier than 2018, and the regular 1258 way before that. The gold shows made in USA and the regular one made in USA with the added stamp Gastonia, NC. Both look the exact same. Six holes, four and three-eighth inches high, and H3 stamped n the bottom. Over the decades and after I switched from Delco to Napa I never noticed a difference, but truth be told, I wasn’t paying attention. At one time WIX made the Napa filters but I that was a while ago ??
