Hi Rich! That's a nice one! Is that a repop window sticker? I think the only way to get the 4-speed (not listed on the window sticker) in '78 is with the W72 400...not sure that is true though. If it didn't have AC, I'd be all over it...so close! It doesn't list posi or the 4-speed on the window sticker either...unless they came with the Formula package. Thanks for posting it Rich!

That is fairly low optioned, save for the AC. I dig it. But I am partial to low option W72s.
Appears to have been originally ordered with gauges, and Formula steering wheel. But crank windows and radio delete. Awesome.
They ordered white letter tires, but appear to have skipped the other option that gives the T/A suspension.
Most importantly they ordered the right go fast drivetrain combo.
It appears they skipped limited slip. Or maybe in 1978, unlike 77, it automatically comes with W72.

My 77 4 speed W72 does not specifically list 4 speed on the options. Ill post the windows sticker for it. I dont know if it was the base transmission for formula, or how it otherwise got selected.
As far as posi, my 1977 does not list it and did not get it. So it came with an open 3.23. I dont know if in 1978 it was different and the package automatically got posi.

Thanks for the info onetirefire! I just read in Rocky Rotella's Firebird & Trans Am book that the '78 Formula (and TA) came with either the 4-speed or automatic standard (no-cost option) M21 when equipped with the W72. It didn't say anything about posi being standard with the W72 (obviously standard on TA). Rocky also said the Formula came with the base TA suspension for 1978 model year to simplify inventory.

I just only now saw this thread;

My second cousin is on this forum, his user name is HO_Kenny;
His first cousin is the original owner of a 1978 400-4spd.
The car is numbers matching and currently going through an extensive restoration.

I believe it's a 1978, and I cannot confirm it, but my gut says it's non-AC.

You could message him for the specifics - I am pretty sure it's being restored with the aspiration of selling it.

I want an automatic W72 Formula for the pure stock drags...plus the fact that you just don't see them. The 4-speed cars seem to have a higher survival rate since they are more desirable to the enthusiast. Only 4-speeds in '79. Now, if a '79 W72 just fell into my lap, I probably would get it.
