Most universal tractor fluid brands meet the John Deere J20C performance specs. Even the Super Tech meets J20C. I suppose a guy could splurge on some semi-synthetic TGH oil if used in cold climates.

I'm running the real J20C from the local JD dealership. Even that stuff is cheaper than a case of Dex 3 from the auto parts store. I'm running it as an experiment, as I was planning on rebuilding/replacing this unit anyways. So far it's working great. Fluid is clean and clear, shifts are crisp, no weird noises. I'll report back how it does long term.

I was in Trade School, working the Auto Transmissions unit. I filtered barely-used trans fluid through some paper shop towels. Sent the car out the door.

Car comes back in a couple weeks. We drop the pan, and the pan and trans filter is full of paper fibers/debris.

Be REALLY careful about shop towels as a filter. They're not coffee filters.

For the record, I've heard at tech seminars that coffee filters will filter to ~60 micron, which is what GM wants when flushing trans coolers.

Typical disposable paint filter strainers are 190 micron. There are 125 micron versions for waterborne paints. That's what I use when filtering fluids, it filters out any hunks and chunks.

Anybody know what micron level the metal mesh or dacron trans filters are?

The shop towels I used were not the blue ones most people buy at Auto Zone ect in rolls. I used CAT Heavy Duty Cloths that come in a box. I get them from work at the Truck Shop. These things are actually tough to tear in half and thick. The surface is not fuzzy at all like the blue shop towels. Very smooth, almost hard.
I just went out and looked at the fluid. its in clear containers and there is nothing settled on the bottom like you always get with used fluid. Looks and smells new.
I could re run it though some coffee filter but those things are kind of small. Not sure how I would get it to work with a decent sized funnel.
I used Red Line ATF quart jugs, cut the bottom out and used it as my funnel. A couple of shop towels worked but if I tried it with coffee filters fluid could go around the filter.
