I am finally getting around to sorting the windscreen washer out. As we know the stock pumps do not work worth a damn. I am using a tank with a bottom mounted pump as all modern cars have. Main issue is I would like to clean out the inside of the squirters, both sets pass air, but I want to remove any scale inside.
Soak in Draino or equivalent? Other thing I noticed was there are at leat 2 different types. The ones on the left are from my 71, the right from a 1972 hood that I have. Mounts are identical. The 1971's tubing is bent the same, just clocked differently. It appears our host sells the later version. |

Which bottom mounted pump tank did you use?

1975-81 Firebird.
Though thinking about this you could drill a hole in the bottom of the existing tank and secure the pump to the bottom with a nut. Last edited by Scarebird; 04-26-2026 at 06:01 PM. |

You have any idea what's built up inside the tubes?
Are they 100% steel, or mixed brass/steel? In general, draino will turn organics, oils, grease, etc. into something water soluble and should be safe for steel. IMO, it's not a bad place to start... Draino is not safe for soaking aluminum, brass, bronze, pot metal... If you think there are hard water deposits, acids will be needed to dissolve. Vinegar is a safe place to start but... It will be difficult to get anything out of them by soaking alone if the orifice/tube diameter is small. You have a small wire you can use to mechanically clean them? |

It seems to be brass: the tube portion is non-magnetic and looks to be brazed to the steel mount. I will try the vinegar over a 24 hour period.

Would a sonic cleaner help dislodge anything that is clogging the tube?
