Marked my balancer for 36 degrees before top dead center. Now if my wife will assist with taking the engine up to RPM at 200 RPM increments while I observe with timing light I’ll begin my mechanical advance tune…. Realistically I’ve just got a marked balancer. She says it makes her “hair stink”.

Just got a text from the upholstery shop. Turns out the cloth interior in my ‘55 Catalina was actually very well made, but very old and beat, seat covers. She found original material under the cloth seats. I figured these were long gone. Not that I would have wanted them to look this way.
The seat covers are in the background. Kinda a white/green tweed They were so tight and fit so well, I thought it was an old upholstery job.

Got the oil pressure fittings set up to run oil pressure next to the distributor

Then swapped the brake booster out, what a pain in the a$$

Still need to bleed the brakes

Default TriPower minor revamp

These were a set of TriPower Carbs that I bought 35+ years ago.
They came off a 1964 421 HO- which originally had vacuum actuated outboard carbs
Sold the useless (to me) bare ’64 intake manifold to IA Dick Duclow- and ended up with the carbs for free.
The carbs had an aftermarket mechanical conversion linkage that someone had installed, and some ugly ass homemade fuel lines.

I initially wanted to replace the ugly fuel lines- but the aftermarket mechanical linkage prohibited installing factory fuel lines that due to interference.
I liked the nostalgia of the aftermarket linkage- which utilized a replacement longer center carb throttle shaft- so I just lived with the ugly fuel lines.
I’m sure I probably could’ve fabricated something much nicer years ago with very little effort- but that just wasn’t high on my priority list.

Finally decided to change it up a bit- and bought a replacement ’65 center carb throttle body, some factory ’65 fuel lines & factory mechanical linkage.

Picked up the Bird from House of Hotrods last week. After five months, mostly due to parts availability, I am pleased to report they nailed everything. The HVAC system works with the proper outlet selection for defrost, bi-level, A/C and heat. No more vacuum leaks or coolant leaks with the intake manifold. The Q-Jet is finally behaving now the way it should without those vacuum leaks. The front seat tracks work perfect. The front clipped was realigned and there's no more tire rub from the left front fender and the hood fit is perfect.

The wife and I have taken it out on a couple of dinner dates and it has been very "driveable". I just need to chase a tempermental temperature gauge. I suspect the multiple manifold installs may have damaged the sending unit as the needle will come up to about 130, then jump to 160 after 20 minutes. Infrared gun shows the crossover at 205. Regardless, it is so nice to have it running the way it should. Now we'll see how it does in their car show May 30th in Mansfield, TX and the Arlington city show on June 6th. I'll try to do a driving video this next weekend.

We had the cars out at the yearly High School auto shop car show. Smaller crowd this year, but always a fun and chill event with some of the alumni dropping by and the school culinary program serving up burgers. Always happy to support the school - we've gotten a lot of use out of that shop!

Got my two strong-arm sons to set the bellhousing/tranny assembly back into the '26 tonight. The transmission is fine, so it wasn't contributing to the driveline noise- which may be totally due to the loose hub-to-wood-spokes bolts of the left rear wheel (still waiting for custom threads to be machined in the wheel puller I built). Taking the tranny out wasn't wasted effort, as the clutch disk was worn down to the rivets, so I had it refaced. The clutch itself was fine- until I broke it! The flywheel has three dowel pins that engage with slots in the pressure plate- except if you misalign it and start tightening the bolts, as I did. No clutch to be found, so I had the cast pressure plate welded, which warped the heck out of it- needing considerable machining to correct. But the clutch cover (also an iron casting) could not be corrected if warped that badly. So I had the broken pieces just tacked in place while clamped to a flat plate. Then made 1/4" steel strap pieces to go under mount bolts and cover the broken areas. All I can do now is cross my fingers that it might survive....

Test drove the '26 today- the clutch is surviving okay and the chatter is gone. But the drivetrain is just as noisy as before. I guess the differential needs to come out- anybody versed in spiral bevel gears?

My father and I installed the folding top almost 30 years ago - other than being a bit faded it has held up well. I picked up this plastic cleaner/treatment after noting it does not contain silicone for the princely sum of 8€.

It worked quite well, but will require another application I think. It does not leave a greasy film like Armor-All and a few others I could name.

I ran across this on a drive to town. No, it is not a giant swimming pool but a portable bullring.

Not something you run across everyday in the USA.

Added a little something to the rear of my ‘64 Tempest Custom with its factory ‘64 one year only bench seat 4 speed Hurst shifter. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an option in 1964, but hey, I’ve always liked these Hurst Equipped emblems.

Took the grandkids for ice cream a few towns away. Did a 180 as I passed this Ventura for sale. Wasn’t there a few days ago. A little on the high side for what it is, but looked like a fairly solid car, owned by someone who has no clue how to put graphics on a car.
