Surface rust removal on machined spindle surfaces?
I'm helping a buddy with getting his 1970 Catalina back on-the-road.
It's been sitting for over a year with the front brakes shoes and hardware replaced, but the wheel hubs and bearing not put back on. He was looking for a replacement hub, which he recently found. He made the mistake of cleaning off all the grease on the spindles and now they've got surface rust all over them. A fairly decent amount. What is the best way to get the rust off? I've heard vinegar works, but haven't ever tried that. Is there something stronger to spray on or brush on and let it do the work? Or do I just get out the 800 grit and machine oil and polish everything? Thanks in advance! |

Evapo-Rust works well for me. Phosfo spray is supposed to be good as well, although I’ve never used it.

You could try some evaporust, soak a rag and wrap around the spindle, then a plastic bag over the rag. Or the 800 grit like you said.

Fine stainless steel wire brush, the size of a large toothbrush. The kind you use in a weld shop to brush TIG welds while they’re still hot

Get a brass wire wheel to load in your drill .

800-1200 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper and WD-40 has worked good for me.

Like I posted just remove the rust that you can with a brass wire wheel as it’s only the bearing inner races that SIT on the spindle not the bearing rollers .
the races don’t roll on the spindle. Remove the rust you can and grease it all back up and slap it together. Ware protective glasses when wire wheeling.

I found fine sandpaper clots up too easily.
3M 7440 work nicely and "wraps" around spindles quite well.  |

Scotchbrite pad as above, brown and WD40!!! Or 0000 Steel Wool and WD40 That also works well for getting rust of chrome bumpers. Steel wool is actually less agressive than the scotch brite

The grey ultra fine scotchbrite works well for me. Always keep some next to the sink for cleaning up stuff without marking steel. It will put a fine buff polish on aluminum. I think it is rated at about 3000 grit.
