We are going to Altoona for static display. Then watching it thru Latrobe on old PRR main, day lster. Rumor it is stopping in Derry Pa. For service. Why not sure why. Buddy saying loco can go 80 miles before service. Latrobe has/had American Locomotive Plant still there but shuttered Made springs and 'tires", other parts. My dad's good friend worked there. I have 4 big pics of different locos they made.Plant is huge though. Remember late at night steam forging hammer pounding away zine. . We are watching route.

I saw on e of the "Big Boys" a few years back at a museum in the Denver, Co area. I was there to load an early Teens car, sorry can't remember what it was, but I remember the Big Boy was clearly something special & just seeing it was a treat!

No inside help. We heard that they are having 2 days of tours to see static Big Boy. It's free. They are using a big parking lot of gas co. You'll go there, get a bus to see loco. We guess first come first go.
Also we are supporting T1 trust.Group is /are building a PRR T1 new. Drivers are made I've heard by a casting co near Beaver Falls,Pa. The frame has been welded (not cast) by a big steel fabricating company in Ohio. Boiler made out 100k of steel, still needs tubing for water-steam. Steam chests are being machined right now.Loco will be put together in brand new huge bldg in Dennison Ohio. They have rr history and old equipment there. Look up T 1 it is huge. Saying ready to fire in 2030. They have approx 75 % of money needed. That fabrication co in Ohio was the last company asked to build the loco. 2 other companies turn the group down. I witnessed the welded frame in Altoona last year their welding is amazing. No warpage, just amazing welding plate that thick. Yes I'm into real trains, model trains, real construction equipment esp Manitowoc cranes, naturally the Pontiacs. Also I'm learning to fast dance,East Coast Swing, cha cha, foxtrot.i dance about 2 times a week . Last edited by sdbob; 06-04-2026 at 08:26 PM. Reason: Add words |

BIG BOY Coming to my hometown. I remember this in 1976 The American Freedom Train, a massive 26-car traveling museum celebrating the nation's Bicentennial, arrived in King of Prussia, PA, on September 12, 1976. It was parked on an industrial siding near the old Sears warehouse on Valley Forge Road until September.

Saw one (or it?) go through Minnesota a few years ago. Definitely worth the drive to go see it if you are anywhere close to the route.

Keep checking the area you want to view the train. Lot of confusion with maps showing it using track that is now just trails. Schuylkill River had tracks on both sides of river but a lot are now walking trails. I hope more info will come forth as we get closer to the dates.

Every crossing packed in 2 countys.
Was told people where showing up 3 hrs early. Had stopped couple times(didn't hear reason) but running half to an hour late. Decided go out in open country with no crossing watch full steam. Didn't disappoint making up time Seemed like 60mph! Pistons to wheels where a blur! My train guru buddy said could do 80! Blasted horn several times going by. Nice! Unfortunately vid didnt turn out well. Buds didn't either but he's gona try clean up on computer. Gona stay in town on way back in July while gong slower.

We just got home from the Lehigh Gorge above Jim Thorpe where we got to see the Big Boy heading north. The smaller steam locomotive with tourists went thru at 9:30, the diesel electric followed at 10:00 and 4014 came thru at 10:30. What a once in a lifetime experience! Thank you Union Pacific. The spot we chose was only accessible by walking/bike trail 7 miles from the trailhead, my first time on an E Bike, looks like I got to get one of those puppies.

I may try to see it on its trip home. A few years back, we were driving I80 and saw puffs of smoke north of us and figured it was a steam engine. We stopped in Kearney, NE where it also stopped. Not Big Boy but a “Challenger type” with old UP cars on a tour. It was a big engine. And to think Big Boy is even 12 feet longer..

I got to Hornell by 12:30 PM for BigBoy''s 2PM arrival- would have needed to camp out there the night before to get near the track! Couldn't see much through about 250 feet of humanity.
My son had a better idea. He went to Waverly where BigBoy spent an undisplayed night and found a good spot on the train's route to Owego. He got immersed in steam as it passed about 10 feet from him!
