Disassembled my factory shifter from my 66 GTO for a rebuild. Encountered a piece ( labeled B in attached photo) that has me confused. When I removed the rear housing plate A this thin sheet of what appears to be stainless steel was attached to it photo C. I don’t know how B was able to stay in place on A. The only means of attachment appears to be the small hole punched into B which produced 3-4 small protrusions on the back side of B( see photo D) that created a slight interference fit with the hole in A. I pulled these two pieces apart with almost no effort at all.
In photo C you can see two vertical witness marks on part B. These appear to be the result of the shift gates pivoting back against B in the course of the shifter being operated.
What is the purpose of part B? Is it just a wear surface to protect part A? Part A is stamped steel, so why would it need protecting?
I would like to retain part B, but the way it was originally attached is way too flimsy. I’m thinking of using a very short stainless steel pop rivet. I don’t want to use anything that will create interference with the shifter operation. Based on where the witness marks are on B, it doesn’t appear anything makes contact with it on the left side near where the hole has been punched, so it doesn’t seem like a pop rivet head would cause any problems.

Kept digging and found answer on page 288 of GTO Restoration Guide. Exploded view of 66 Hurst shifter shows this thin stainless piece is “Spring, Interlock Plate Anti Rattle”. Still like to hear suggestions on how to reattach it.

Have you ever looked at Paul Cangualosi’s YouTube channel ? He has a company called 5speeds.com. He has a video on rebuilding a Hurst shifter. As well as Muncie transmissions etc. I followed the Hurst video to a T to rebuild my 1964 factory Hurst shifter. I would highly recommend you watch it. Very helpful. Good luck.

A is the part that holds the shim and levers in in the back. The other is the anti rattle plate.

I have watched the Gear Box video segments on Hurst shifter rebuilding several times, but none of the shifters Paul disassembles contain the part in question, including one identical to mine, so no hints from him on reattaching this part.

I will say that Paul is very approachable and down to earth. I have called him several times with questions. He has always taken the time to talk. I know one time I sent him a photo regarding a question. Good luck.

Agree 100%. I ran into him at PRI and we had a great talk about my Super T-10.

Problem solved. I temporarily reassembled the shifter after zinc plating the moving parts. This allowed me to confirm that the only part of this anti rattle plate that received any contact was the left side. No contact on the right side anywhere near the hole punched in the plate to attach it to the rear plate of the shifter housing. With that knowledge I reattached the anti rattle plate with a pop rivet.
