I have a 1966 GTO in burgundy poly. N on the trim plate.
The drivers side fender was crunched and when I bought the car, it came with a couple of fenders.
I’ve started doing the prep work in order to paint but am having a hard time getting a paint match.
I’ve been to a couple of automotive paint stores and the toners are discontinued and the metal flake is too pronounced. I’ve brought in the wiper cowl and they shot the piece with their expensive color match gun.
Still did not match. Way too red and sparkly.

TCP Global has a Restoration shop division that has a code and they claim to have the original super fine metal flake that went into this paint code.

I do not want to paint the whole car, I simply want to paint the fender I’m replacing and have it be as close as possible.

Has anyone ordered paint from TCP and the color be accurate? Anyone have a modern paint code for Burgundy poly?

PPG has formulas available in their Deltron, Shopline, and Omni lines. Can't say whether or not they will match your car, but to do the job properly, the adjacent panels should be blended. Someone could spend the time to tint the color around and get it as close as possible, maybe close to perfect, but time is money, and spraying a blendable match would be less time consuming. I also have a code N '66 and tried all 3 PPG mixes, a BASF Limco mix and an Axalta Nason mix. I found the PPG Shopline and Omni mixes were the closest to what original color I could find on my car. Have you tried to contact the tech advisors at POCI and the GTOAA? Maybe they could help you. I've been following your project on another forum and was wondering how it's coming along. Good luck..

You're welcome! Here's what I found in our system at work yesterday. And also the color on my cowl. It is the Shopline (JB) version. Omni and Shopline are the same paint, just labeled differently for different distributors and you know, make things more difficult than they need to be. Our computer shows a gallon of Deltron (DBC) being about $2,400.00, where as the Shopline (JB) is about $350.00. We spray Deltron at out shop, and I sprayed out a sample of the prime (Standard) variant and is was way too brown looking compared to what I found on my car. The Shopline was a much better match. Some will say that Shopline won't cover as well, and you'll need an extra coat or two of color. To them I say, I'd rather spray a couple extra coats to have the color I want, and save the extra cash. There is no way that the Deltron is nearly 7 times a better product, I've sprayed them both enough over the last 14 years to say that in a lot of cases the Shopline/Omni system is superior. We only spray Deltron because they do have a better, well, more extensive color library.. that's not always what it's cracked up to be either.. Sorry, I got on a rant. I guess the point I was trying to make is, don't be afraid of the "lower level" paintline. Hope this helped.

No, but that’s a great suggestion.
I’m going to follow up with Johnny’s codes at my local PPG dealer and see if it matches better.
I’m currently stuck with getting the fender painted but I did order a carb rebuild kit and looking to get the engine back together.

That spray out picture you posted looked way better than what I received from the other paint rep. I know it’s hard to judge colors by looking at a computer screen I can tell it’s closer than what I purchased a quart of.
I’m not in the least concerned about the less expensive paint. Maybe if I was doing the whole car, but I’m only doing a fender.

Johnny, did you paint the cowl or is that original? Do you have the mix code for the scan of your cowl in the Shopline paint?
I think my mistake is that I limited myself to one automotive paint store which was Valspar. The fellow that works there is supposed to be the excellent at matching paint. Here was a spray out on an old fender..

That is the Shopline formula that I sprayed on my cowl. Your color looks very purple or bluer than what you sprayed on the fender. Deltron does have a variant they call "Darker Bluer" that might be the best choice, but unfortunately would be much more expensive. I'd have a small amount of the Shopline mixed and see how it looks. I wish you were local to me, I'm always up for a tinting challenge, especially on an old goat! If that fender is junk, you could cut a piece off and take it to your local ppg jobber and see if they could tint it around. Attached is the formula for the shopline mix and a computer generated comparison between Deltron Prime (standard) and the Darker Bluer variants. And also a couple more of my cowl and firewall.

Johnny, appreciate the PPG suggestion.
Today I went to the PPG store and the color matching system was far more sophisticated than the last place I went to.
The fellow there spent close to an hour helping me find a color that was a close match.
I ended up going with a polyurethane acrylic.

Nice! Glad you found a decent match! I actually got out of work early, and was able to stop by our distributor's store. I had them mix a sample of they Omni formula. I'm going to try to spray it out over the weekend to compare it to the Shopline mix. They say they're the exact same thing, but I noticed comparing the two formulas that they have a different amount of tints, and the amounts poured of each are way different. I'm very curious to see how close (or more likely different) the two are. Keep us posted on your repair process, can't wait to see your '66 getting back on the road.

I went back to the PPG store on Friday to see if they could modify the paint I chose a week earlier.
I had a new quart mixed up and I had them remove all metal flake and add a tiny bit of black.
Color match is great, painter (me) not so great.
Still, I’m going to go with it. It’s a very close match.
