Hi All,

Has anyone used engine paint from Seymour? (https://www.seymourpaint.com/)

This is what my engine builder likes to use, but I've never heard of this brand and they don't appear to have the right color for a 65 engine.

I'm wondering if this is a good brand, and if so, which of their listed colors, if any, would be appropriate for a 65?

Appreciate any suggestions/feedback!

I contacted Seymour Paint technical support asking if they had an engine paint in the correct color for 59-65 Pontiac engines. I also supplied the Pontiac engine colors cross reference list from the post Keith supplied: http://www.pontiacpower.org/enginecolor.htm.

The Seymour technical support guy told me they used to have this color but it had been discontinued many years ago. I asked if they had a paint code for this color, but he said the Seymour paint codes are not universal. Evidently they are specific to their raw materials. Thinking they might still have the formula hidden away somewhere, I asked if Seymour would entertain the idea of making a limited production run of 59-65 Pontiac engine blue if a suitable quantity were ordered by a restoration vendor like Ames. The response I received was:
"No, we won’t make it ever again. If you can find it in a pint or quart, you could take it to a paint store---they all have little machines that can inject this paint into a pre-charged aerosol can. It’s a great option when you just need a can or two."

So, looks like we can scratch Seymour Paint from the ever shrinking list of sources for 59-65 Pontiac blue.

Has anyone either found a pint of the right engine paint, or been able to go to a paint supply store and had some engine paint color matched for the 59-65 Pontiac color?

Bill Hirsch does both spray bombs and bulk.

Edit: you might have to check on the availability of spray bombs at this point. It has been a few years since I bought from Hirsch.

I recently spoke to Scott Tiemann who's article in a 2014 Hot Rod issue covered the detailing of a 65 389 that has been in his family since new. Scott is known as one of the world's foremost Pontac restorers, and a judge with the GTO Association of America. At the time of the article he developed a formula with Delstar Paint that matched the color in places where no oil or environmental discoloration was present on his original 389. He told me that he no longer sells the paint but that the formula was given to Inline Tube. I called them to inquire if they were selling his formulation but the guy I spoke to had no information or knowledge about this issue. They do however sell Pontiac 59-65 Sky Blue Paint which appears to be exactly what Butler Performance sells. This may or may not be Scott's formula.

I was able to color match some paint at Sherwin Williams Automotive Paint for my ‘64 Tempest. I am pretty sure that SW automotive is nationwide, so anyone should be able to duplicate this color for their 59-65 Pontiac. I have been running the car this year after installing my motor last November. So far excellent durability and no burn off ( I am using KRE heads). I am including a photo of the spray can from SW and a photo of my engine for reference. Good luck!

I clicked on the link and it said it was out of stock. As a matter of fact, it is my understanding that Plasticote paint for 59-65 Pontiac engines was discontinued several years ago. The choices are indeed becoming less and less.

Because these engines are so old it's important to find an unmolested survivor where the paint hasn't seen oil or sunlight and color match that area. That's what Mr Tiemann did 12 or so years ago. It's misleading to follow the local Pontiac guy's advice unless you know his source. I'm sure bad information concerning colors have been passed along to the point where it becomes a "fact" when in reality the first guy had it wrong from the start.

I used duplicolor DE1610, not sure how close to original it is but it worked for my purposes.

Looks great, but to me the blue looks just a little to light. Could be the lighting in the room

This is the paint I used on my 62 Catalina engine. Spray can paint. VHT SP122.
Readily available and won't break the bank. I can not guarantee it's a perfect match because I didn't have any original parts to match it off of. Here are a few pics. It has held up great for 4 years so far.

Interesting- for me it came up as available. That said, it’s a match to the old Plastikote, by Seymour Paints.

When I painted my 65 421 the paint was more of a metallic light blue that I remember. From pics shown that color almost looks close to 74 V8 color maybe the camera - picture.
