I switched to Baldwin and will also use Hastings. Both are made in the USA. No more Wix for me...

Baldwin B39 for me.

I bet they shrunk that WIX filter to save cost and fit into tight engine bays. I'd still use it if I had to. Heck, look how small a filter for a LS is. Even the 5.7 Hemi car application calls for a small body filter. One difference may be that these new engines use thinner oil, and don't need as much filter area. A midsize filter body like the new WIX is likely OK, but I wouldn't use a filter as small as a LS.

Thanks fellows. So much for buying local, i guess ill be buying my oil filters online. I don't think i can source Baldwin locally. Ill keep an eye out for purolator

Baldwin B9 is the larger version of the B39 if you don’t have headers .

If you're buying Purolator the top model is the Boss as far as filtration specs.

I use their filter ( Purolator Boss) in all my fleet, along with a by pass filter if you're serious about exceptionally clean oil that can run much longer between service intervals.

Is the XP Wix filters still good to use? I have one on the bottom of my Clearview which filters to 115 Micron itself. Wix 51060XP i believe. It was wire backed media which I like with my Titan oil Pump.

Im not aware of any issues with wix filters other than the size difference with the same part number.

I have yet to see the size difference here and I'm sourcing them at Napa and oreillys. No problems here.

Wix and Purolator are owned and made by the same parent company--Mann + Hummel.

First Guess: Same filter, different paint and different box. Last I checked, you have to look at the individual filters (not the boxes) to see where they're made.

SO FAR, the Purolator oil filters I've been using are USA. But don't stop looking at them, because Mann + Hummel will source from where-ever they feel like this week.

Ive cut open close to 20 wix filters recently on 4 new engines. They are either wix from oreillys or Napa gold from Napa depending on where I'm buying that day, and they are all identical. All still say made in usa (like that makes a difference) but it seems to matter to some people.
I'm thinking depending on where you are in the country and where they are sourced from is making some sort of difference in vendor and/or supplier variances.

Anyone cut open one of the shorter ones yet to see if there are differences inside vs the taller one?? I have yet to get my hands on a shorter version. They seem to be non existent out here.

I don't think the filter 'shrinking' is an 'issue' per se, I'm more concerned about construction and filtration. I suspect it may have been done to consolidate product lines more so than construction costs. I think ACDelco did the same with the PF24s.

I would be interested if the WIX filters have dropped off in quality/function though, that's why I asked.

As for the XP filters, they were designed to provide longer service life when using syn oils, and in doing so the level of filtration was compromised. If your using syn oil and extended change intervals, then maybe it's a good way to go, but personally will continue to use the higher filtration filters and change oil more frequently.

I went outside and looked at the case of 51258s I bought a couple of years ago, and they are the slightly shorter variety.

I went into NAPA about a year ago and bought a NAPA Gold for my GP. I noticed it was marked Made in USA so I bought all 6 they had on the shelf - all were Made in USA. When those are used up I will most likely switch to Baldwin.

That's exactly my thoughts but the premise of this thread seemed to turn to "they got shorter so they are junk I'm switching brands" mentality

When in reality a hair shorter filter doesn't mean squat as long as it's constructed with the same filtration quality inside. Hence the reason I asked if anyone has cut the shorter filter open, that's where the truth lies. Even better how's the oil analysis look? Still a good filter media doing it's job or does it suck. That's what I'll use to determine if it's still worthy so until I see those results and a major change in quality then there is no reason to swap brands at this point.

First QC issues started to show up with MH now more cost cutting is enough for me to stay far away. They even paid for the oil their faulty filter dumped on the ground and could have caused a lot more damage. Stupid if you qsk me.
