Side topic.
When determining your total system capacity. Note most common Pontiac oil filters do not hold 1 quart oil. Fill yours, let it soak up the oil. Tap it, then do it again a few times. Note how much oil is used in doing so. Do you run a remote filter set up..... Calculating the amount of oil inside the lines to and from the remote filter and inside the filter itself is always a good idea. My remote filter lines have about 1/4 quart inside them. How much oil is up inside a running engine ? .

The case of 51258s I have are all made in USA, just looked at them.
Production date is 05 31 22. It has holes in the center metal tube, not louvers. I'm not seeing much info on issues with WIX filters, most are blogs/forums and not very reliable. Some are for other models of filters, not the 51258, and some are the XP line. .

I'm tempted to cut one open.

What I see in front of me along with an oil analysis is what I'll base my opinion on and if something is ever off I'd absolutely consider other options. And if the subject ever came up again here I'll post what my current findings are, good or bad. Because honestly I'm not loyal to any particular filter, I just use what gives me good filtration for my given intervals. Just to add, if the shorter filters ever pop up around here, I'll buy a couple, cut one open and run the other one with an oil analysis and see what if any difference. Then I'll know for sure. |
