Anyone have a picture or description of the fasteners used to hold the chrome trim on a 68 GTO valance?
I'm assuming it uses the self-threading speed nuts on the posts, but the nuts I have here that fit the posts won't clear the bend in the sheet metal to tighten all the way down on the posts. The chrome trim is NOS GM, the valance is re-pop, the posts fit perfectly in the valance ... but is there some difference between OEM and re-pop on that flange where the trim mounts? If the speed nuts I'm using did not have the typical flange they would probably fit. Thanks

Hmmm, that's pretty much what I'm using.
Picture this, the hole for the posts is very close to a 120 degree bend in the valance, say 1/4" away, when the nut threads down the flange of the nut hits the adjacent metal. Of course I want to immediately blame the re-pop valance, but the original chrome trim fits it perfectly. It appears the 68 is slightly different than the 69, obviously doesn't have the grills, and it looks like the posts on the 69 trim go in at a much better angle for access. Ames shows different part numbers for the 68 and 69 valance trim. It is possible I could make some spacers so that possibly the nut would tighten up before the flange hits the panel. I'll take another look at this and see if I can get some pictures.

I'm not the most mechanically inclined guy but I noticed the same thing when I installed the trim piece on my 68 GTO. I went to Ace hardware and got a few small rubber bushings and it worked out great.

Yep, exactly the scenario I'm running into. Looks like I'll have to remove the valance AGAIN to install them.
