Tracing down a voltage leak that is killing my battery (-ies)

Our host sells one regulator that is $29, and another that is $99. The $99 looks fairly original, and I would hope has a good long life ahead of it. But, that is kind of an olde skool way of looking at the worlde; I'm intrigued by the idea of solid state versus the ancient electromechanical.

The backstory is that after stabbing in the new ACDelco alternator, and pulling all the bulbs from the little lights scattered througt, my battery killing voltage leak persists.

Now the fingers are pointing at the voltage regulator, which looks like the OE fit. They don't last forever. And this one did suffer through a system meltdown when the steering shaft yanked the + wire enough to dead short main power and nearly weld the shield tube to the block.

I'm leaning to my friend's advice that "it only hurts going in..." but am open to the more experienced folks in the forum for advice.
