LOL...you've got it nailed, troll.......

I've spent the last 6 years spending more money than I should have restifying my '66. I guess that makes me an idiot....

man, that gtohurstjudge sounds like a major jerk! i wonder how many miles a top-scoring GTO would get driven...
so now, not only does he dislike the 04 GTO, but to have some kind of opinion of a Pontiac, you have to own a slew of them, and have them in competitions? Screw perfect scores.... this whole subject was kinda fun, then some guy comes on here tring to cop a really serious attitude over who can or can't have an opinion. people like gtohurstjudge are why car shows aren't any fun. sure, i've only onwed two pontiacs, a 78 Grand Prix Sj, and a 79 Grand Prix Lj, but still pontiac power as much as you won't admit it, and the 79 is getting a gt-37 350. While not a points-placing GTO, it's still a 'real' pontiac, and while i'm not making big money doing what i do now, it will get me by for a while.
If anything, whatza-monaro is more of car enthusiast than the majority of this board. A guy who owns a GTO, a vette, and a 740i? Wow, sounds like he likes some pretty cool cars. I guess because i've owned a datsun 510, a renault, and two mazda rx2, and my dad raced a mazda rx3-sp, i can't have an opinion here either without being a troll?

Champ, Mr_GTO, someone do a quick search on Heff. I think he's whatza monaro.

Anyway, the point Nickv (I think) was making with his posting of the 1976 Monaro pic was that the 1976 (and for that matter the 68-76 Monaros) were built on the GM platform. Look at that 76 pic a little closer. As I suggested days ago, go to Holden's website and look at all the old Monaro's. Can't any of you '04 haters see what the Monaro was and is? Pontiac is in complete control of the direction that Monaro is going today and that is why the '04, '05 and all following will be real Pontiac GTO's. GM has dictated a lot to Holden and is even holding the true Monaro (a higher valued car) back. For example, the '05 Monaros get the LS1's while the '05 GTOs get the LS2. The Monaros are tailored toward BMW owners (with features like the Australian version of On-Star, an extra guage package above the radio, etc.) while the '05 GTO is tailored toward American muscle car purchasers. That's MUSCLE CAR purchasers, not stang purchasers but more like Cobra purchasers so when comparing numbers don't compare mustangs (including 6 cylinders and the weak a$$ V8) but rather compare sales of the '04 GTO to the '04 Cobra. When you do I think you'll find that Pontiac is quite happy with the numbers they have generated in their first year.

Goathead wrote: At least I started with a real Pontiac GTO and a real Pontiac motor, how about you? What did you start with, and actually end up with come to think of it... A foreign car with a name change....

So yours STARTED as a true GTO and NOW its something else. My '04 might have started at the Holden plant (and NEVER had the Monaro equipment or trim installed) but ended its journey as a true Pontiac GTO (which it still is), whether you like it or not.

then the younger crowd wouldnt understand why its pontiac blue. oh by the way i got my girlfriend to wear pontiac blue nail polish i bought her. thats cool as hell

Earlier you posted that it will take $40,000 to get this car "right". Well, if you've owned it all these years, why did YOU let it deteriorate so badly?

A decent amount of maintenance would have kept it from being the wreck that you now have.

Evidently you're really not much of a car guy.

Your posting shows it...

Give it up champ. The car was driven daily for nearly 30 yrs in all kinds of weather, 20+ of those in Montana where it frequently dipped to -30. It has held up quite well given that is has no rust, no dents, interior is worn but has no tears, paint still has a shine to it but like most red finishes it has some fading and a few hairline cracks in the rubbber on the nose, vinyl top is fully intact but has faded and is peeling slightly in a couple of corners, weather stripping is intact but like most 34 yr. old weatherstripping it is in need of replacing, engine runs fine but is tired as most vehicles would be after 278,000 miles, it is missing 1 chrome trim ring and the radio still works! As far as the $40k: From what I've read that's about what it would cost to do a frame off resto with labor. I may not go to that full extent. We'll see once it starts getting torn apart.I suppose by car show standards it would be considered a wreck. By restoration standards it would be a solid platform to start a restoration project. If my other car was a GM Monaro you'd probably be hailing as some sort of hero for keeping an old Goat in such unmolested factory condition for that many years....But then again I really don't care what you think.

What's interesting about all this Heff is that depsite having owned 3 GTO's and 1 '67 Firebird ( those would be Pontiacs for those of you in the GM Monaro Glee Club ) because I've owned a Chevelle, a C5 Vette ,a Dodge, and a Ford and my daily driver is a BMW ( an import!, better tell TriPower to dump his Mazda ) that somehow makes me not a Pontiac guy. I guess the same would apply to Champ who also owns a Chevy and a Lincoln. Or TriPower who also owns a Ford ( in need of a paint job...his own words. Oh My!,he must not be a "car guy" if he lets his vehicles "deteriorate" like that ) and a Mazda ( that would be an import TriPower, sorta like my BMW ) as a daily driver. Give these guys enough space and they will eventually show the rest of us the hypocrites that they really are.

I'll ask you again....... What color is the sky in your world?

BTW, the F-250 has almost 200K on the odometer, and I still drive it, even though it needs paint. The Mazda is the wifes, but I wouldn't expect you to actually read and comprehend simple sentences.....

Hypocrite?

The rest of us?

LOL!

Really, about that sky........

Apparantley in your book a Ford F-250 Pickup has the same value that a 1970 GTO would have. Given that you're so much more of a "car guy" than the rest of us, you're right: I should be driving that GTO everyday driving it's value down and incurring more wear and tear on it instead keeping it covered in a garage and saving my $ to get it restored. Thank you for that brilliant insight. BTW: The Mazda is a daily driver and an import is it not? By your choice? Regardless of who in your family drives it? My BMW is a daily driver and an import is it not? By my choice? Regardless of who drives it?..... Hypocrite.

I DRIVE an import as my daily driver, and so does my wife......... I've never denied or even brought it up. How am I a hypocrite?

You brought up the F-250, which , btw, runs great and will continue to be driven, since it serves my purposes as a pickup fine. How did you deduce that I put it in the same class as the GTO when YOU brought the subject up? I am not a Ford F-250 fanatic, yet, I still keep mine in good operating condition, since I need a beater truck. Hypocrite? Do you even know what that word means?

Are even you getting tired of the Monaro doesn't look like a GTO argument and are looking for other ones?

In a previous post you had accused me of not really being into cars because I drove a BMW and not being a "true Pontiac enthusiast" because I didn't drive my 70 Goat on a daily basis, but rather chose to garage it until it coud be restored. You further blathered on about how I didn't take care of it because the paint was faded, etc. As far as the GM Monaro: Pontiac built their design reputation on a "wide track" format. I would like to see them incorporate this into a modern day GTO similar to what Ford was able to due with the 2005 Mustang. The front end of the 'Stang looks aggressive with the hood extending over the headlights and a full length recessed grill. The backend still has some retro cues. The boys designing the c5 and c6 'Vette have wisely kept the distinctive tail light treatment retro as well. Hopefully GM will follow suit with a newly designed GTO.

Sorry to dissappoint you Rad...that wasn't me. Given the similar jelly bean looks of the 05 to an import and it's optional higher spoiler I still believe Pontiac is marketing the GM Monaro to the tuner crowd jusy as they did with the 04. I seriously doubt they would have changed a thing had there not been such a negative reaction to the single side exhaust, flat hood, etc.

I never mentioned your Beemer. Ever. In any context. I made comment that your apparent lack of enthusiasm for your '70 (hasn't been started in years) called into question your claimed status as a GTO fanatic.

I completely, 100%, agree with everything in this paragraph. I wish that Pontiac had done the GTO with a more retro look. I have stated many times that I feel that the '04 GTO would make a perfect Grand Prix or Grand Am.

That said, I feel that the '04 GTO is the perfect car for me (affordable, V-8, RWD, manual with a back seat), in spite of it's misnomer. I can see past it's ONE limitation as a GTO (looks) and appreciate it for what it is. A LOT of performance car for the money (sounds a lot like the original GTOs).

So I ask you, how am I a hypocrite. I've never changed my opinion or posted anything different regarding this vehicle.

Oh, and $40k will be a good starting number for a frame off on the '70, depending on how much you do yourself, and how many of the original parts you can use and how far you go with it.

It is worth it in the end, but I estimated about $20K when I started my '66, and I am rapidly approaching $40k and I did a lot of the grunt work myself. Those $200 boxes from PY add up quickly.... At least it was spread out over a bunch of years.

It seems we have more in common than not....... btw.

Perhaps the Beemer / Chevelle comment was from Radon or Mr_GTO. My apologies if it was. As far as the cost to do a resto: I was told as you have indicated: about 20K then double it. This was my whole point for the contention on this board: There are people here who think you've got no right to criticize the New GTO unless you're some sort of a collector, have an award winning vintage goat, etc. When I logged on a year ago I was hit with an onslaught of insults, allegations, etc from all the hallowed "experts". Given I make my living arguing with people ( atty )then I jumped into the fray. I actually logged on to see web pages on other GTO's that had been restored. (Champs, Dannys, yours) I'm using some of these as a guide to restore my 70, particularly Dannys. I keep waiting to see a 70 pop up. Personally, I get more out of reading posts from those that don't have an "award winning" Goat such as Heff or Disco but are passionate about their rides.

PS: I forgot DJs! My nephew has a '68 that I am trying to keep him from butchering. I told him to look at DJs as a prime example of what a clean/bad ass 68-69 should look like.

Personally, I get more out of reading posts from those that don't have an "award winning" Goat such as Heff or Disco but are passionate about their rides.

No one is questioning your right to voice your opinion, but you gotta admit (in fact, you did) that registering with the name you did, and posting, negatively ONLY on threads that have to do with the new GTO makes people wonder about your intentions (the word troll comes to mind).

You don't see me or Humbler or MrGTO jumping on DJ or GoatHead or the others whose opinions differ (well, maybe a little ) on the car. It's more of a matter of respect. You call me an idiot because I like my car, and I'll get defensive.

We all have a common love of Pontiacs here, and can differ in opinion and argue, but at least contribute something positive! I am glad that GM brought us a RWD, 4 seat performance car with a manual. For that, I thank Beavis and Lutzhead. I wish it were called something else.

You've got a cool GTO, that I would LOVE to see restified. Let's talk about that!

>>> That was my original intent a year or so ago and I got slammed. I personally think the 04 is a good car. As a GTO I don't like it, but nobody is forcing me or anybody else to buy it. I just like to pick a fight with the "experts" who think they are better than others because they have this or that sitting in their garage or something on a wall / trophy case.

>>> Deal.If you know of anybody that has a web page showing their restified 70 Goat I'd like to see it....haven't decided if I'm going to go with a full resto, maybe a Judge clone or something close to a pro-street look. I would love to continue to drive it as you are able to do so in sunny FL, but in Utah the road salt would chew up a 34 yr. old undercarriage in a couple of years.
