bigunde,
I make statements based on my experience as an engine machinst. Like I have previously stated, the Big Three plus all the engine manufacturers ALL build their share of junk. To label one worse than the others is folly.

Seems to me up until the last 15 - 20 years Mopar did not make a bad engine Even IH made a boat anchor (DV-550) Cummins even has one; the triple nickel

FORD, had a 90 F-150 351 Supercab long bed 2x4 for 14 years, never spent a dime on fixing any drive train related stuff. Had to switch over the AC to 134, replace a fuel pump in the foward tank, paint it, brakes etc. In 2004 I sold it and bought a new 2004 F-150 Supercab 4x4. So far the only thing I have done to it was brakes. I wouldn't buy a Ford car, but I really like the reliability of their trucks. (So does Consumer Reports) compaired to Chevy and especially Dodge.

bigunde,
Saw an AMAZING thing on "American Trucker" last night. NASA owns 4 1967 model Peterbilt 351 "needlenose" tractors. Guess what engine was in them?? Not a "K" series Cummins or the equivalent 6 cylinder Cat......12V71 Detroits!! Imagine that, a "V" type diesel engine!! Don't they KNOW big hammer wouldn't approve??

More schooling i see: http://phystutor.tripod.com/stang/en...cleveland.html Cleveland Family Cylinder Heads The Cleveland design cylinder heads are the real trick to the engine's performance. Several versions exist. Monsterous ports are found on the four barrel (4V) variety giving very high flow capacity on an all out race motor. Somewhat smaller ports on the 2V version result in increased low-end torque, perhaps better suited to today's street applications. The combustion chambers were made in closed chamber quench shape, and also in a lower compression open chamber style. Engines designed for hydraulic lifter camshafts use slotted rocker arm pedestals, for non-adjustable rockers. These slots maintain the pushrod alignment. 1971 Boss and 1972 High Output engines featured mecahnical lifter camshafts with flat pedestals for adjustable rocker arms and pushrod guide plates. These heads also have machined valve spring seats for use with mulitple coil valve springs. The high performance heads utilize single groove valve stem locks. Australian heads come in even more variety.

big hammer,
YOU NEVER have revealed EXACTLY WHAT it is you do for a living(other than run your mouth). I've machined MORE INSTRUSTRIAL DIESEL ENGINES than YOU'VE EVER SEEN. WHERE do you gather this "vaunted" knowledge from? My guess is your backside!! Yak, EVER HEARD OF EMISSION SPECS??? That is what has killed many successful diesel engines, not the fact they weren't good engines. Try reading up on EPA regs on diesels starting, oh let's say starting about in the 1980s. Little things like sulfur dioxide emissions, particulates, noise...........
