We ended up with 415hp and 534tq. Len Caverly who owns the dyno felt there was a little more in it but we ran out of time and had to get it off the dyno. I want to thank Jeff Esmel(Shaker455ho), Len Caverly and John Goguen for all their help.

That is a great street engine, HP is right on and torque is in the stump pullin' range..... I bet it is making great power at 3000 RPM also.....

being that were on the subject, curious what the same engine w/ the HC-03 cam, super comps would put out. all else is stock. this is what I run in the 74. compression is up a little due to thin head gaskets and shaving the heads just to clean the surface. probably around 8.8-9ish :1. I read an article that has a build similar to mine (cam specs were off just slightly) and it was 450 hp/ 520 tq. I will say it makes my 79 w/ a 400, 62 heads, xe274 cam and 3.23 gears seem slow vs the 74 sd w/ DN 5 and 2.73 rears. both run 2.5" exhaust. Actually took the 74 out this weekend to clean out the cobb webs. This car never fails to produce thrills.
I'm looking for the short paper filter if anyone has one or knows of the pn. I can get the long one, but not the shorty. may simply change the filter housing snout if I cant get them and run the long filter. I took the brass chunk out and it runs much better. cant believe the guy I had do the carb said it was better. I knew he was full of it, but wanted to try it any way. that and along w/ other disappointments prevent me from ever calling or referencing him again for anything. |

The engine was run on headers (my manifolds are cracked), compression must be close to stock, it has flat top pistons, heads are untouched, stock sd intake no port matching or anything, pretty much stock except for cam.
Now I'm sure there are better cams that make more power, but that wasn't what I was going for. It's not a pure stock engine or anything, just a show car. It was put on the dyno to basically break in the cam, check for leaks and make sure the bugs are were worked out BEFORE it went into the car and there were some. Like the brand new crane xr-i points conversion module not working out of the box! We got another one yesterday and it worked great. Hp/Tq numbers were just a bonus. Jeff and Lenny are great guys! I tried to scan the dyno sheet, but my scanner isn't working? Nice #'s Marc. Should be a great running SD T/A.
FWIW . . . With headers, your SD made very similar #'s that my HO made with stock 2.25" outlet manifolds. Mine made peak TQ of 530 @ 3000, and peak HP of 430 @ 5100. Of course, mine has had a bunch of cylinder head work, 10:1 compression and a small (232/235 @ .050") solid lifter cam.

Very nice numbers!
I figured if I lowballed the number, you get a great result out of reverse pschology! :-) |

your numbers are real close to mine 8.9 to 1 .040 over with stock rods and replacement stock type pistons. Only difference appears to be port match on the head/intake, roller tip rockers and at the time a solid cam, 60 deg overlap, 110 lsa, 240 duration @ .050 and 4.95 lift. Pulled 419 @ 5200/// 520 @ 3550--torque numbers were already coming down at the point where we could get the good readings--really spiky under 3200 rpm. I've since changed up the cam, rockers, intake and carb, has more top end hp and less torque down low--and no, none of the original parts are for sale :~)

Stock SD engines respond so well with a cam swap.
My old SD engine was a beast with the old HO Racing #HC-63(HC-03) cam and stock SD components.

Very good numbers for that combo!
It took many years for me to gather all the pieces for a real SD-455 so it's a novilty just to own one and a plus have it running!

Just curious, I assume your numbers are corrected horsepower and torque. Do you know what correction standard was used (SAE J606, J245, J1349 etc..) - For what it's worth, not all dynos and dyno numbers are the same! Thanks for sharing.

No Idea. Have to ask Len Caverly, it's his dyno. Seems consistant with what others have experienced though.

seller states that it's still titled in orig. owner's name, so never re-titled or registered. those are likely the original plates. Now if this thing is as claimed, probably should set the high mark for a 74. too bad it's an auto--and a 74 ;~)

I can tell you first hand....nothing wrong w/an auto 74!!! The car came from Michigan and went to Florida a few years ago. It sold on Ebay within the last 24 months as I was researching the orig tires. The plates are not original, they are plated Historical. Very Nice car and yes, I threw in a bid or two. JN
