Well...if you blow the picture up you can see into the rear wheel opening and see holes in the frame rail....

Here's a few more of Eddie Hill's car plus one of M/T and his side by side engined Pontiac powered thing.

Keith,

FYI- the color photos of the altered is not Willie Borsch but Mike Boyd driving.
The pic with the wheel coming off is at Bakersfield only a few years back. Mike was OK.
The fueler you see has an open dif. Many did, not sure why. Several guys from back in the day told me that some used open difs for some reason. Makes no sense to me.
Very good contributions here by the way.
I wish there were more photos of Mickeys stuff from very late '62 and early '63. It seems most all of his Pontiac pics are at or prior to their US Nationals win in '62 and prior. The Tempest shown is a good example.

Steve,

I was going to mention Mike myself but got sidetracked on posting pics. The "new" Winged Express is better than ever and Mike does a great job with it. I was lucky enough to find a replacement M/T scoop and donate it for the rebuild. I hope to see you again at this years "50th" March Meet.

Rob...

Keith- thanks for placing the M/T photos at Indy '62.

Steve- Although he wasn't very "public" about it, Don Garlits was a proponent of open differentials, I believe as late as his first trip west- whenever that was- '60 or so? I admire that he understood the basic principle- that an open differential (assuming a normal implementation with equal-sized side gears) delivers the exact same torque to each rear axle, thus no forces trying to "steer" the car. But he fairly quickly "went with the crowd", realizing the possibility shown in the photo- traction of one tire "blowing away"- still equal, but almost nonexistent torque.

That's my all-time favorite drag photo- the driver of the C&T altered looking down at his crank, etc. as he drives over the pieces!

Willie Borsch put on the best show ever- whether making a fantastic run, or swingin' it rail-to-rail, he never disappointed.

Thanks. I guess I was going more for "literary flow" and not so much for "journalistic integrity"....

Man! I had no idea. I would have guessed fer sure that these guys would be running a spool.

Makes me think of a story, though:

My dad had a buddy that ran a fuel dragster back in the late 50's/early 60's. He was in it as a hobby, not a lot of capital, so his equipment was pretty rough. He made a pass one time and somehow the nitro fumes got to him, so when dad and the rest of the crew chased him down he was throwing up at the big end. He told dad "...Van, I don't think I can ride back in the car. You'll have to sit in there and we'll tow you back".

Dad said he got settled in and they started back down the return road. Of course, you are sitting right on top of the diff housing, and the rear end in this thing is going "BANG! Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, BBRRRRRRR BANG! Tinkle, tinkle, tinkle, BBRRRRRRR..." all the way back to the pits.

Dad said he didn't feel safe in that thing going 25 mph down the return road; he couldn't imagine going down the racetrack...

Who knows about Bobby Watson's Catalina? if you look at the picture there arent any holes bored in the frame rails!
I took a look again at the photo in Charlie's book: you probably know better than I but it appears the frame side rail is obscured by the exhaust pipe.

There are other pictures (and an artist's rendering) which show a take down pipe that seems to exit below the middle of the door on Watson's car.

FWIW -

I looked at the pics again too, and I think your right on the exhaust pipe blocking the view of the frame, in the wreckage pic. if you look at one of the others you can see the holes in the frame (rear wheel well) you have to look hard, but it looks like there are some!

Talking Jim Christianson

Wareagle,
I met Jim Christianson in 95 at the Tiger Run in Oregon. Real sweetheart of a guy. He also came down and spent Memorial Day Weekend in 96 at my mom's house to hang out and talk.. what else..but his 1963 Super Duty LeMans Coupe!!

Funny story he told me about a guy in his Vette had come upon Jim & ALOT of other kids hanging out & starting talking trash about his Vette being the fastest etc.etc..

So, from what I remember Jim told the guy to put up or shutup and then meetup at this certain place to street race. So the guy takes off ahead of Jim . He has this fine girl thats in the car with him
& so Jim proceeds to fire the LeMans up and drive over to where they were going to race.

So Jim pulls up in the Super Duty and the guys almost sh*ts himself because this LeMans is making a helluva lot more noise than it should. So than the guy starts to back down but everyone is out there now to watch this vette blow the little white Pontiac outta the weeds.

To make a long story short, Jim beat him sooo bad that the girl this guy had with him got into a fight over it and Jim wound up taking her with him after the race. He dated her for a couple of years I think after that.

Pics are of Jim & Me in 1995 at Tiger Run in Oregon & his autograph in Pete McCarthy's book in 1996

Ok - I'm guessing from the lack of response nobody knows?

I'll take "speculation" at this point...

Anybody familiar with this car? (I'm sincere, this is not a quiz).

It appears the photo was taken at Thompson, Ohio. I am also guessing it is a modern (ie not vintage) photo.

Thanks -

K

I've been trying to keep it a secret, but it's in my garage awaiting restoration. And Pamela Anderson spent the night with me last night also!

But looking at that picture I guess it proves that the 'pie crust' slicks were still popular in 65. That's whats going on mine.

Was the Bobby Watson wrecked car a trailering accident? I ask because if somebody was driving it when that happened, I don't see how they would have made it.

Keith,

With all my other health problems, anything I could catch from Pam would be secondary. Come to think of it, there wouldn't be much chance of me catching anything from her anyway if you catch my drift!

We had a similar experience with George's Tempest when Dimitri Toth owned it. Could have bought it for $3600 (I believe) but turned it down because the car was in boxes...
