I have to admit that my opinion of Buicks might be swayed because I was employed at a Buick dealer during the 70's. Too many warranty rust and body fit claims, I guess. Maybe that's why appreciate the Pontiac more. I will agree that Buick had Chevy and Olds beat in the styling department in '73.
By '77 the Olds Cutlass Salon and 442 were on top!!

I had a 75 Lemans Sport Coupe back in the day which I thought was sharp looking but my favorite of the period is still the 75 Hurst Cutlass W30. My high school buddy still has his and I think they nailed it on style.

Then look what happens in 76. Pontiac retains it's hideous side profile while Olds gets better.

Buick only sold 44 of them in 1972. I knew a guy who had the rarest of the rare: 72 GSX with a 455 4 speed. Unfortunately the GSX did not survive.

U47 For 1976 some were misses but overall Pontiac had some great designs from any angle - 76 T/A with 78 Wheels etc.

I guess we all see things from a different angle. I would also say Pontiac had a few, but overall there were too many misses with it's bread and butter cars which keep a car company ALIVE. The big cars and intermediates lost ground. The intermediates of the second half of the decade and the next were lost to Cutlass and Pontiac's version of the Nova never made a impression like Omega and Skylark did with what little they could do with most of the styling being already done by Chevrolet. I really wanted to buy a Phoenix, but couldn't get round that battering ram front end grille. Olds and Buick had a more Seville looking ft. end which was popular at the time. Seville is a great riding/not so much sport handling looking 11" stretch X body known as K body. It's problem is 1,000 lbs. more weight. But like I said afore, some of those parts just bolt into a X body which make it nice for people like me who think a car should handle and brake as well as it's ability to go fast. GM had a enormous parts bin to choose from, you just needed to know which parts were which and then make a good car even better.

Pontiac always maintained selling around 500K to 900K cars each year. The sales record they hit in 1973 (breaking the 1968 record) was broken again in 1986. While the mid-1980's are usually not discussed much, Pontiacs were extremely popular during the latter half of the 1980's. Their biggest seller in 1986 was the 6000. You hardly ever see those anymore, yet they sold over 200,000 units in 1986 alone. By 1988, sales of the 6000 had softened, and the FWD Grand Am, Grand Prix, and Bonneville became the most popular.
