It's a '66....and a nice one at that.

We still use tire/wheel conveyors like that today (except typically the tires are laying flat). Tire/wheels are usually built up in a remote area of the plant and then conveyed to the final line in such a fashion.

You can imagine, too, how important it would be to stay in sequence. If you got out of whack you could have one car with three whitewalls and one blackwall, and then the next one would be messed up, too, until you finally caught it. It was especially tricky with trucks, since some could get 4 tires (no spare), some 5, and some six (dually).

We used to keep a library of "wrong" tire/wheel assemblies next to the installation point so that if you got out of sequence, or got a wrong axle (5 lug instead of 6 lug, for example) you could throw the corresponding "wrong" tire on the vehicle to keep the line moving and then repair it out back.

As far back as 1946-47, GM conducted a "Build a model car and enter in our model contest". That must have been the start of the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild. Two of my cousins built a model from wood and entered it in about 1947. They recived an "honorable mention", and the model was returned to them. It was not a standard size model but I am sure they had size guidelines.

Neither went into auto design, and both became mechanical engineers and worked at the nuclear design lab, Sandia Laboratory, in Alberqueurque, N.M.

This may be what you are thinking of.

These models were on display at the Truck Engineering Validation Center when it stood at South Blvd and Woodward in Pontiac. They are currently on display in the lobby of the GM Heritage Center.

I'll try and grab some pics the next time I am over there.

The model I saw was of the actual Fischer Coach. I googled it and apparently it's a common subject. Lots of photos of different interpretations...

That's it (or one like it).

His coach received the highest score for quality and craftsmanship of any entry before. His version is what earned him enough fame to be provided tools to create the other truck models.
