What are you guys talking about when you say "180" headers? Are you talking about 360 headers where each cylinder is paired with the one that fires 360 deg of crank revolution after it? That is the only kind of header I have ever heard of that was referred to in degrees. And it required tubes traveling from the right bank to the left bank and vice versa.

I picked up a Late Model asphalt car with a healthy SBC and 180 headers a few years back. Sounds like a giant Kawasaki Ninja crotch rocket.

360* would be a full revolution which means you're referring to the same cylinder. 180* is only half of a revolution which means one cylinder is directly opposite of the other. If you stand facing north and make a 360* turn your still facing north. So 180* headers means if the #1 cylinder fires 180* away is #7 which would be where that header tube attaches.

I am not saying what your saying is not correct, but that is the craziest way of designing a header that I have ever heard of. A 360 degree header means that there is a full crankshaft revolution between the tubes that are y'd together, in other word 1-6, 8-5, 4-7, 3-2. What that does for you is provide equal scavenging of every pulse by the one before it, every time the cylinder fires. Fords did it alot, probably because of the difference in the way the banks were numbered and the firing order. It would be pretty hard to do it on a gm it seems like to me.

I can't imagine what the advantage of a 180 header would be? I guess it would be better than a 90 degree header?

I was doing some googling and found these, have any of you ever seen these RAV tri-y manifolds?

Not sure if that quite qualifies as a Tri-y gearbanger? Looks like all the tubes come together at the same point, no?

A tri-y header sounds more throaty or deeper tone than a 4-tube. Its not quite like a 180 header but more like a clocked header sound than a 180 & even then its slightly different.

Thats a quote from Ron about the sound.......cant speak for it myself.

Came home from work and my headers were on the porch. They look great and were packed well. Ron did a great job! Thanks, Ben

RE: Pontiac 180 headers. Herb was the only one I can think of. He brought the prototype car by the shop one day. My concern was the size of the special pan that allowed the tubes to cross under the engine. Seemed to have very little capacity for a wet sump pan. The car at the shop was not dry sumped. There was a cast alum. pan and a sheet metal version.

Sure it is, look closer. The one on the right is obvious, but the lower Y is hidden on the left one because that is the side that has the 1-5, 3-7 arrangment and the secondaries are side by side going down instead of front and rear oriented.

Holy crap! After studying this header theory for a day and a half I think I finally undertand the terminology. A 180 header is the same thing as a 360 header, but the 180 thing is an important part of the physics. You pair up cylinders that fire 360 apart, with another pair that fires 360 apart, but just as important you dont wany any of those four cylinders to fire 90 degrees from any of the other cylinders they are paired with, so..... all four pipes in the collector will fire 180 degrees apart.

So in a firing order like 18436572, you would pair up 1-4-6-7, and 8-3-5-2 for example. Also you would want the tubes all to be the same length to keep the pulses ariving at the collector at exactly the right time to scavenge the previous cylinders intake stroke. This is where it all gets basically impossible.

One of the articles said that was why ferrari and some of the others uses a flat orientation of banks in there engines. It makes all the cylinders fire 180 degrees apart. I thought that was pretty interesting.

David unless you have a really shallow oil pan it may be tough to get them to cross from side to side unless they go through the passenger side door like circle track cars. Maybe a dry sump.

Just to make everyone aware.....ramair3 is next up in old orders. Ron will be starting on his shortly, and I just spoke with him.
I'd like to know where my headers are at. I think it was 2-18-11 I got a PM along with gearbanger stating our headers would be done the following week. A few months later gearbanger finally gets his, and I'm still waiting. During this time 3 or 4 other people have gotten theirs and now you're saying ramair3 is next for the old orders, so where did mine go again?

Skip our car wil get a dry sump system. got some info that the 180*headers are for top end performance only like the cup cars. and lesser suiteble for road racing. still think they look sexy tho...

Most of the short track asphalt cars here use them also so must have a decent broad TQ curve also.

FWIW when they changed the rules to allow dry sumps over wet sumps most guys picked up around 20 HP just with less oil windage and similar motors.

Picked up this car with dry sump, fire system Wide 5s , Quick Change rear axle 355 SBC iron heads Brodix intake for $5K. It was backed into a wall so needs the rear stub and a fuel cell redone. Figured it would make a cheap road race car.
