428 GT Cars
I'll add this update. Driving that same 428 powered Cobalt that Todd Frantz drove to the 2019 US Nats GT/FA class win, at this year's US Nats, Irvin Johns drove to the GT/EA win. It was an All-Pontiac final, against Stacy McCarty's 3rd gen GT Bird.
Johns qualified #20, with a 9.144. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2021#indextop Also, here's a short video interview of Don Kennedy, with his 428 Pontiac powered GT/EA Sunfire. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...98&postcount=6 Last edited by ponyakr; 09-08-2021 at 04:31 PM. |

Bruce Campbell 3rd Gen GT
Recently learned of this 6X 400 Bird.
It ran more than a sec under at times. Won a div 2 race, back in '99, I believe it was. He was #8 on this nat event Q-list. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCStory.asp?ID=37286 "I won the 1999 NHRA division 2 points meet @atlanta ga. Ran an old worn engine 6x 400 but still did ok. Ran the div2 national open in Montgomery Ala.don’t remember which year. Tried to get gt/ha record of 10.25 ,best it would run was 10.261, close but no cigar. Ran IHRA national event @ darlington SC,IHRA Divisonal &farmington nc (runner up). , IHRA Carolina dragway sc. (runner up). Hard to remember Dates of all races I entered, getting old and forgetful. Bruce Campbell former 2704 S/SS" This is another example of a Pontiac powered GT car, that I didn't know had Pontiac power. There are probably others. For a while, the car was named "Tat'r". https://autoimagery.photoshelter.com...LQRJqA-&GI_ID= He sent me some pics. Some are not very good quality. But these are all I have. Salute to Phil Monteith
This is a salute to Phil Monteith.
His "Hatari" Pontiac powered SS cars have probably won more races & nat championships than any other Pontiac powered SS car. I assume he began with his '69 RAIV Bird, which he ran in B/SA for a few years, before switching over to SS. He later bought the former Herslow & Morlock '73 SD455 T/A nat record holder. He switched it over to a 400 powered '74 model. Sal Biondo drove it to his 1st nat event win, in '90. Phil then fielded an '82 model Bird in GT Super Stock. Peter Biondo won his 1st SS nat championship in it. Since then, Phil has been running a 4th gen Bird in GT, 1st with a 400, then switching over to a 428. Peter won at least 2 more nat championships, picking up lots of big wins in Phil's Pontiac powered Bird. Phil still runs the 4th gen & has a hand in the Pickett/Agneta 4th gen GT Bird & the Biondo 2nd gen Stocker Bird. So, Phil has quite a history in Pontiac powered class racing. My hat's off to him ! Congrats Phil, for all your success in Pontiac powered drag racing ! |

Quickest Pontiac Powered SS
I posted this on the race results thread, but apparently never posted it on this thread.
At the Fall Classic National Open race, Irvin Johns' 428 Pontiac powered Cobalt made an 8.782 pass, which was 1.318 under it's 10.10 GT/EA index. IF that info is correct, that makes the the car the quickest Pontiac powered SS car, ever. http://classracer.com/classforum/att...7&d=1634491177 Last edited by ponyakr; 11-25-2021 at 12:57 PM. |

Mike Morgan '77 Bird For Sale
Quote:
Mike Morgan Bird: Thought I posted this, somewhere on the site. Just did a quick search & couldn't find it. Saw the ad on racingjunk.com, while lookin for something else. The car is a '77 Formula, with a "Parsons & Myers" built Pontiac 350 engine. Has "Heads UP" built heads on it. Car has run more than a sec under it's index, & has won class @ Indy. Was also RU in class to Bill Rink, @ Indy, a couple of times. It was once raced by Sal Piacentini, in div 1. I suppose it could be raced with the 350, or a 400. OR, one could make a bracket car out of it, with any Pontiac V8. At 1st, the $35k price seemed a little high. But, as I've checked some current prices, & thought more about it, I've decided you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal on a proven competitive Pontiac powered SS car. https://www.racingjunk.com/stock-sup...29&from=search Last edited by ponyakr; 12-06-2021 at 04:29 PM. |

Anybody Have One ?
Looking for someone who has either a 1972 or 1973, or both NHRA "Factor Finder" booklets.
Don't need to buy. Just need for someone to look up some Pontiac hp factors for '72 & '73. |

Jack Good Passed
Monte Howard just posted that Jack Good recently passed.
Monte had sold the former Ken Shawver '78 T/A Super Stocker to his long time friend, Jack. For those of you who are not familiar with this car, it was a many time Indy class winner, & once was #1 qualifier @ Indy. Monte drove it quite a bit in recent years. He said that Jack's wife still owns it & wants him to race it, at least for this season. So, I assume Monte will do that. Wish Jack's wife the best, & hope Monte has a good year of racing in the Bird. |

I have PHR article somewhere. The rear upper 'control arm' reminded me of 58 Pontiac rear attachment arm.
