The poor distributor was weak enough that it developed a hole during the latest round of cleaning. Unfortunately, I think she's cooked. Should be fun finding another with an acceptable build date.

A little JB here and there , repaint with cast aluminum below the ID rim.
Easier than the pits in the axle housing to repair.

Or , spend the 4 figures on a replacement.
Or , other variable alternatives

It is pretty compromised though.
I'd start with seeing if it's still snug in the block bore before getting too friendly with it.

I'll give it a shot. I guess it's worth it before tracking down another. I just need it to hold itself together when banging gears!

There are plenty of good 1970 cores, get one restamped, and the original.. dunno, it's not wall art, looks like it was in the Merrimac.

Who do you guys like for dashboard restoration? I called Just Dashes and almost passed out when I got the quote lol

No problem paying for quality, just looking at all the options out there.

I've been hearing good things about Al Knoch dashes, and they have a decent turnaround time of 2-4 weeks.

They do not provide cores, sending them one is mandatory.

They're next on the list to call. Just Dashes wants an extra $600 for bright blue. Jeez

It might be worth the upcharge if it was actual colored vinyl - in correct shade.
Last I heard they spray dyed anything other than black.

Dashcaps were a great invention but wouldn't be up to speed for your level of restoration.

That's how I feel. I'd have no problem with the upcharge if it was actually blue vinyl.

I've run dash caps on a few cars, and if you take your time with them they can turn out pretty nice. Definitely wouldn't run one on this car, but I'm glad they're available.

More painting. The firewall came out great. The rest of the sheet metal is painted up, and wet sanding is coming up. It will be cut and buffed until it's smooth as glass. I know some guys really like to replicate the original finish, which had a slight peel to it, but I can't bring myself to leave a single speck of peel lol

Having recently worked with Original, repop ( OER) Al knock, and just Dashes PADS. conclusions.
1. Nothing fits as well as originals in all aspects. There are products to repair these and even do the grain.
2. Repop OER dash pad fits pretty well, needs some work to get radio bezel to sit down in flush. The reinforcement area near center vent is missing in the rear. Wrong grain for 1970, and only available in Black. I have used sem color one a test blem dash. It looked fine, don't know how it would last.
3. Al knock. Look nice, however end up being too wide at A pillar area and glove box and radio bezel, and lower dash panel will NOT go on without 10 hours of scrapping out over foam from under the vinyl, then re gluing it down. So much over foam that glove box door would not even close.
Putting in the gauges it a very very tight fit. I saw the first ones redone at MCACN. years back, looked great, but . Be prepared to work with tiny right angle pick, and test fitting.
4. Just dashes. Nothing will be perfect, but the work these guys do comes as close as you can. They do probably 20 of second gen dash pads per month. They use Sem and coat vinyl before it's shrunk. This is key, if it has issues, they see it right then. Only slight over foam issues. Best option...
Any fix, or recovering MUST have a brace across bottom. ( I used angle Iron with holes) to keep dash frame from cracking.

Awesome information! Definitely something I have to figure out, as the car is getting closer every day.

As for the rear gears, ended up using the originals as they were in great shape. Everything is back together and the assembly looks awesome.

Question: Any idea why the 70 front sway bar has one end squared off? I took a pic of it next to my 71 bar. I never noticed it before, but looking at another 70, it has the same squared off end.

Have seen the flat edge, belive it for production and probably the hang side to keep bars from moving around as they cooled. My 1970 RS SS Camaro had one.
