I too am curious how this cam runs now that the install is where it should be. It may be perfect for you, or you might be the guy who wants to burn up the A&W on Lafayette during a local cruise night with his 650hp "street" motor.

Straight up cam install should be "good enuff" most of the time, but degreeing will optimize performance. Degreeing will also find the occasional factory cam or timing set that isn't cut exactly right. I think I was able to get 1.5 degrees by swapping around various combos of crank and cam gears during one engine build. I had 3 identical Comp timing sets in my parts pile.

Good work!
Squidward,
Whaaaaaaaaat? A&W on Lafayette? You did some detective work there! You sure you are in Arizona?
My wife and I love to pound the pavement every chance we get.
She actually got pulled over for doing a loud burnout with this car and the timing chain one tooth off! That's how good Pontiacs run folks! Everyone here already knows that.
Bet you all can imagine how happy I am with finding that problem.
Now I have back to back family events at our house.
I had to quit wrenching on the Pontiac yesterday because I had to get the go karts ready to rumble. We have a big yard and 3 karts running around like a circus. Three sizes so everyone can have some fun.
I will be able to finish putting it back together this morning and test drive maybe Monday.

I've read every page and admire your persistence! I know you are putting back together but second the advice of some others here to put a more appropriate sized cam in there to compliment the e-heads. This Crower 60916 would really wake up that engine:

Thanks for the 1.65 rocker and cam recommendations. They both sound like great ideas. It's getting really nice out here FINALLY and above all else we value our time behind the wheel. I usually do my upgrades in the off season.

Just having fun. I've only been to Bay City once when I was a kid. I grew up in mid-Michigan, near Lansing. Not trying to go full creeper, but thought I would blow your mind just for fun!

If things go as planned I might move back in a few years to get some big yard.

Here's a pic of the car WE were working on. Since that pic I put the factory ram air pans on it and opened the snouts.

Broke the case on the Muncie dumping the clutch. That's why I have a Super Muncie now. What's a Super Muncie? It's a Muncie that has been rebuilt with a thicker case so you don't crack it when you use it behind a Pontiac V8! I recommend it to all who own Pontiacs with Muncies.
Here's a link to the Supercase;

You might consider the Voodoo 702
http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1775&gid=287

The Crower 60916 with 278/289 advertised compared to the Voodoo 702 with 262/268 advertised duration. Both have similar .050" duration (within 2 degrees on the intake) and both ground with a 112 lobe separation. The voodoo cam has 132/140 degrees ar .200" but I'll suggest you will not get that information from Crower for that important evaluation, like comparing the duration between .050" tappet lift and .200" tappet lift.

I didn't note the compression involved here. But note the Voodoo lobe has shorter seat timing and the all important additional valve lift over the Crower lobe, keeping this in mind where the cylinder heads will flow to.

VoodooTTFMF. Harold designed tech.

I fear the 702 could raise the cranking PSI over his current 190.
Personally I'd lean to the 703.

If I wanted 5500 RPM for a 400 engine I'd target .570 lift at the valve, the Voodoo gets ALOT closer.

If these are the correct numbers. The 703 might even raise his cranking compression.

The Voodoo 703 cam card says 275/281 advertised.
May come to advertised rating lift and installed intake centerline.

Thinking that the catalog I have might be wrong. I went to Lunati's web site.

http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=1776

Isn't this the 703? If so why would the cam cam have different numbers then the catalog and web site?

The .050s were .050", the .200s were .200", as expected.
My designs are more unsymmetrical, with more offset, and so a later intake closing point, on the same LSA/ICL. Our shorter cams were on 112 LSA, instead of the 'One Size fits All' of the CC 110 LSA.
Oddly enough, even with the much later intake closing point, our VooDoos made much more bottem end at 2500, where the dyno tests started.
It is not where you close the intake valve that matters, but instead how much air and fuel is in the cylinder when you close the intake valve.
Closing the intake valve is the very last thing you do in the cycle. Everything else has more effect on the air/fuel charge.

I had a little time early this morning to try it out.

Runs like it's a tooth off on the chain.

Can even get it to idle now.

Checked, double checked, and triple checked the plug wires and they are on in order.

It used to idle real nice.

What could be going on?

The above picture shows where I'm at now.
The crank gear has multiple dots on it and none of them line up with the dot on the cam gear.
Here's the best picture I have to see where it was before I changed the position and lined up the dots.

Tried it all over the place just to get it warmed up. The best I could attain with moving it around was a very rough idle. Way out of time.
