A few pictures of my family's old 1966 Bonneville, taken when it was brand new. This was my mom & dad's first new car, and it's responsible for my long time love of Pontiacs. Purchased in State College, PA, and sold in Springfield, VA in 1979. I have no idea if it survived...

The second picture is mom and me - I was about 1-1/2 years old at the time.

I found these two on Facebook from a "That 70's Page". The first one is at McDonald's in Laredo TX in 1977. The second is of Peaches Records and Tapes; unsure where and exact year. I posted these since they had Pontiac's in them.

Peaches records and tapes was on Brookpark and Pearl in Cleveland, about half a mile from Lou Meleska Pontiac.

Actually I remember this time very well. In Virginia the gas was rationed by selling gas on "even/odd" days to cars bearing even or odd last numbers. In my case the GTO had BAL-141 (odd) as the numbers. I still have the tag, too.
If you happened to be good friends with a a gas station owner (let's say a Texaco station) and had a buddy with a tag ending in an even number on his '69 Z-28, you might be able to buy gas any day you like. That is, if you had a screwdriver in your possession and parked around the corner to swap tags first.

My parents took us down to Maine beach for the summer back then. We'd go down in two big cars (my parents, my dads parents, us three kids and a baby sitter). Two big Olds that year (an 88 and a 98). They couldn't make it on a fill up (it was about 325 miles) so we had to gas up in White River Junction, Vermont (lunch at HoJo's). We waited for about 2 hours and only got I think 10 gallons per car. just made it to the beach. After that my dad would go out first thing in the morning to a station off the beaten track and by the end of the week had a full tank in each car.

To be safe when it came time to head back home at the end of the summer we left with two Jerry cans in each trunk. We were able to get gas but it felt good to have enough to make it home if we needed to. The smell of the gas in the car as the trunks heated up in the mid day sun wasn't so nice though!

Most people slowed up that summer even though the double nickel hadn't kicked in yet. I do a lot of intercity and I've tested mileage over the years at different speeds; reducing from 70-75 to 55 reduced consumption by about 20-25% on 60's cars and about half that on modern cars (I guess aerodynamics and multigeared transmissions make the consumption penalty at higher speeds less expensive)

North, mentioning White River Jct. and HoJo's alone brings back memories. We'd stay and party at HoJo's back in '78 thru the 80s when I worked for Anchor Mtr Frt.
