I always laugh when I see these old artists' drawings speculating on what the new model year cars would look like. They manufacturers usually just sent a simple description of the features of a new model, and because all the auto magazines were elbowing each other out of the way trying to be the first to "scoop" their competitors, they sometimes jumped the gun.
This one is from June 1968 Popular Mechanics. They attempted to draw up what the new 1969 Grand Prix would look like. ![]()

That is a interesting attempt, I suspect that they knew that the new G-body would be based off the A-body Platform, and justed added the features mentioned in the news release to a Lemans/GTO. They did miss my quite a biton that one.

If DeLorean is the father of the GTO and Wangers is the godfather of the GTO what would be the name of the guy who actually said yes or no to the GTO? It was DeLorean who approached Pete to share the cost and tooling of the G body, even though the GM rule of one year exclusive rights to a new product ( hence the one year later launch of the Monte Carlo ). I always looked at those years when Knudsen, Estes, and DeLorean while ruling Chevrolet, that Chevrolet had a little bit of Pontiac in it. |

Interesting photo however, If you've seen the actual race the 60 Chevy swerves into the infield and rolls over on it's roof, the driver gets out and then the FE 430 Lincoln engine from the T-Bird goes bouncing by past him, the car is partly on the guard rail, partly on the outside of the track. This all happened because of a previous accident that day which left the guard rail damaged and sticking out into the high bank traffic. The T-Bird went from 135 to 0 in a few seconds.

I thought this fits this topic and would add it in,
The link below comes from many complied Pontiac Racing Machine images. Crank up your favorite driving song and enjoy! http://s412.photobucket.com/user/SPR...UNDAY%20SUNDAY Slideshow/lots of images...

This is a proposal for the 1967 A-Body package, placed on the Pontiac design patio turntable for viewing. These mockups were amazing in that each side of the car usually had completely different looks in order to test styling variations. Note the car has no seats. One side is a hardtop while the other side is a coupe (post/no post). The other side of this car has Le Mans script and gills on the quarter panel.

Interesting spinner style hubcaps on the hardtop LeMans side. Never produced were they?
