HWYSTR455, No AC as BVZ said with the RAIV. It has power steering, am/fm with rear seat speaker, HD cooling/SST required w/RAIV, ride & handling, and center console for options (I did add factory gauges, hood tach and formula wheel). It usually weighs in between 4050 and 4100 lbs. depending on how much gas is in the tank (half/full). The lightest I ever got it was 4030 lbs. with half tank and no spare/jack. It's a pig.

Most '70-'72 GTO's are in the 3900 - 4200 lb. range depending on options. We don't see a lot of difference between the 3 years at the pure stock drags in comparably equipped GTO's.

Whew. So that could potentially put me in the 4700 lbs range....

Glad I did a 535!

I think you'll be in the 4000 to 4100 lb. +/- range curb weight (w/o driver, full fluids). I'll be interested in the 4-corner weights!

That would be much more acceptable, and yes, will post info once I get it!

Thank you for the insights!

I know it's a B-body, but Dan's recently acquired '69 Catalina Ventura weighed 4202 lbs. w/o driver with half a tank of gas. It has the 428, dual exhaust, PS, PDB, TH400, HD cooling, the Ventura option (nicer interior and insulation), as major options (no A/C). I would think your GTO would weigh 200 lbs. less than the Cat with your options/modifications.

ah ha! now we know the culprit here - my repop Custom Sport wheel is stuffed with Helium, Hydrogen and Liteium

This from another section; 71 convert w/chrome nose, aluminum radiator, Gen V 5.3 and TKX

Weights:

Front: 2,100
Rear: 1,820

total: 3,920

54/46 weight split

This with me, and some cargo (220 pounds) and full fuel and compact spare tire.

so 3,920 minus (220 + 120 + 15) equals 3,565

Not as light as I wish for all the lighter components installed but nothing else can be removed without affecting pleasure of driving.

Must be the helium in the Sport Wheel...lol! That's really light for a convert...even with the LS/TKX. 3800 lbs. with driver...not bad at all. It'd be at least 4000 lbs. with the original Pontiac engine.

So was having troubles scheduling my corner weighing with local shops, most scales cap out at 1000 lbs each, and felt I would exceed that. So I figured I would get a total weight as a starter.

I went to a truck scale, the scales have 3 pads, the 2 first pads ae a little closer together, guessing to be able to calculate cab weight, and be able to determine cargo weight with the 3rd pad.

So with me not in the car, 3/4 tank of gas, total weight came in at 4280, with a front/rear split of 2360/1920 respectively. (see attached pic)

Gas (90/10 ETH, depending on season) weighs an average of 6.2 lbs per gallon. Tank holds 6.2 lbs x 23 gallons (142.6 LBS), so minus 25% (35.65) of 23 gallons = 106.95 lbs, if I did that math right.

4280 -106.95 = 4176.05 lbs

Less than I thought, but, technically, since I'm calculating corner weights for actual driving conditions, I should be using full tank curb weight, which is measured weight of 3/4 tank adding the 1/4 tank of 35.65, for a total of 4315.62 lbs.

That is closer to my guess-timate, the truck scales may have been certified by %, and a 2000 lbs scale will have less of a variance than a 50,000 lbs scale. But it still gives me a ball park.

I will keep look for someone to corner scale for me so I can get more accurate numbers, just wanted to close the loop on this for this thread.

Sorry you had to get creative to find a scale but sounds like you found a way.. and no, that wasn't intended as a pun but I won't deny it happened....

1970
Lemans Sport 2-dr Hdtp Coupe 3456 lbs. (base inline 6?)
400 4-bbl. V8 279 lbs.
HD 3-spd 29 lbs.
Dual Exhaust 29 lbs.
V8 Coolant add 13 lbs.
Total: 3806 lbs. (25 lbs. heavier than the GTO???!!!)
GTO 2-dr Hdtp Coupe 3781 lbs. (no options)

1971
Lemans Sport 2-dr Hdtp Coupe 3360 lbs. (base inline 6?)
400 4-bbl. V8 279 lbs.
HD 3-spd 29 lbs.
Dual Exhaust 29 lbs.
V8 Coolant add 13 lbs.
Total: 3710 lbs. (117 lbs. heavier than the GTO???!!!)
GTO 2-dr Hdtp Coupe 3593 lbs. (no options)

So, the AMA weight tables don't seem to be a good way to compare…unless the Lemans Sport wasn’t standard with the 250 inline 6…?

Dennis
Is a 70 LeMans Sport really heavier than a 70 GTO? Front bumper and brackets?

A 350 can't weigh more than a 400... it's a small block, right?

I guessed the split was 55/45 a few weeks ago when I was trying to compare rear springs. scarebird actually measured 54/46 on his 71, so I was happy to see that.

You must remember that a Gen V weighs about 395 pounds, much less than the P400 at 650+.

Also, I have the battery in the right side of the trunk, shifting that weight to the rear.

No.
That total had V8 weight added versus Inline 6
The Sport comes with V8

The nose difference , boxed rear arms versus open arms , and rear sway bar , maybe tiny amount on coil springs if thicker.
Sport probably less than 200 pounds lighter
That's both cars with 3spd floor shift

I couldn’t respond as I was gone for the weekend and just got back. The Lemans Sport was standard with the 250 in-line 6 as per the attached…hard to believe. I’m sure it wasn’t a popular combination, but there may be some surviving examples out there somewhere. According to the 1970 and 1971 AMA weight tables the 350 2-bbl weighs 19 to 22.3 lbs. less than the 400 4-bbl.

Mike, as BVZ said, the GTO is roughly 200 to 225 lbs. heavier than a comparably equipped Lemans Sport/Lemans hardtop respectively, and closer the 250 lbs. for the Tempest/T-37. For instance, my ’70 RAIV Judge weighs 4100 lbs. with driver compared to my ’70 400 4-bbl Tempest coupe at 3800 lbs. with full tanks & spare in the trunk.

Those are dry weights correct? Or curb?

I don't have a spare in mine. How much do those weigh?

I don't have a jack in there either.

HWYSTR455, spares (full size) & jacks are 50 lbs. or so, together (14x6 steel wheels, not Honeycombs). The weights in the Parts Catalogs are most likely shipping weights with 3 gallons of gas, but I'm not sure on that point. They are different than the AMA weight tables which seem to be heavier. I'll have to do a comparison now that you've got me curious about the differences.

I knew my car was going to be a porker, threw a lot of stuff in it.

Add me and a passenger and that's a conservative extra 400 lbs. And add 2 more and that's another 400. Toss some luggage in the back and it will quickly exceed 5000 lbs. Crazy.

I may need to add boost. I made the SCR low enough where I can easily add 8-12psi.

For what it's worth, I made a chart listing the AMA and MPC weights for both 1970 & 1971 A-body 2-Dr hardtops. Remember, these are all base models with no options, so 6-cylinder engines in the Tempest/T-37, Lemans, and Lemans Sports. I hope it's legible. It's strange that the MPC weights for the '71's are the same between the Lemans and the Lemans Sport and only 5 lbs. more than the T-37...which I don't believe.

Today we went over to Tim's garage to pull the front end off. Fist time we pulled the fenders off the car since we got it in Feb. 2014. You can see his '62 Chevy II convert in the background. We have to wash the SW desert dust off all the areas we exposed next to clean and repaint, including the inner fender wells. The bottoms of the front fenders are nice and solid metal.
