One thing I do know is if the SD did get into the 73 GTO they would have been a lot faster then the T/A's at the time because of the weight difference. My 73 GTO has a dry weight of 3420 when I bought it. The 73 GTO's were really light for the size of the car because the GTO didn't have all the insulation & if you did like mine get it with no A/C & no real power options they are / were really light. Thats why in 4/72 cars made it the performance car of the year, of course that was the one tested with the SD in it. too.

With Pre Production Engines their was no Partial VIN as that was stamped to the original driveline prior to the SD being tested.

So if the SD test car carried no partial VIN would the XD or Y8 have been assigned to the block or was it blank and what about date codes in the casting. Were these Cast with the block also or left blank.

The cast date codes were in it when the block was being poured.

I had thought that the EUN and manifest code (engine code like Y8) were stamped at the beginning of the the engine 'build'.
(73 EUN's run in order for their VIN sequence and 74 have their own sequence)

So, that engine on the lift would have a Y8 and EUN on it along with the little sticker for the assembly line guys.
But if they were sent back and reworked, how did they 'erase' the stamped info?

I looked at all the EUN's I have on SD engines.
They do not appear to have been stamped at time of engine build.
Unless the bare blocks themselves sat until ready to put in a car.
But that engine on hoist I would think should have an EUN, engine code and possibly a VIN if they had a Firebird waiting on it?

I have a lot of Y8's with a block casting dates of Kxx2.
Actually very few with a 74 cast date.

These being a very special engine and probably the only production engine to be hand built, may make this all an anomaly.

After 12 years of ownership, the ol' '73 will be transported to Michigan where the new owner plans to undergo a complete 100pt. restoration.
I, along with others who are familiar with the car, know that it was worthy of holding it's own in a strong "B" catagory as far as overall condition.
The car will be nothing more than outstanding after it's restoration and because of it's "1 of 1" production number, will most undoubtly get a magazine feature that it always deserved.
Sure I will probably regret selling it but I'd like to move on with building a vehicle I can really enjoy driving without worry of degrading the value. The resto-mod bug has bit me hard and my plans are to upgrade my '79 t/a with all the trick goodies........suspension, big brakes, wheels/tires, EFI, 6 speed trans, etc.

Anyway, congrats to the new owner and hope to see the car again, be it in person or publication.

I just got my issue as well and was glad to see a SD TA on the cover. Reading the article and looking at the pictures, you can tell that the restoration seems to be very accurate (except for the change to 4sp). I was curious about the tires though. I knew you could get the Firestone Wide Ovals or the GoodYear Polyglas in 73. But did 73 TA's come with Steelgards?

IIRC, the Steelguards are more accurate for 1974 cars. The infamous Firestone 500 Steel Radial was the main radial offered for 1973.
