OK, and it BETTER work! Cause we been on the phone for 1.5 hrs..........
We have been going over the wiring and the switch connections, and have proved it should work. Good thinking Gary! Charles Last edited by Old Goat 67; 01-21-2009 at 09:45 PM. |

Great News......
Charles[ Old Goat 67] and I have finally figured it out... maybe a total of 6 hours phone time.... you DO NOT need a jumper wire for the headlights and parking lights to be on at the same time. We believe this applies to the 65 as well as the 66 and 67 headlight switch. And, it could possibly apply to other body styles also. You need to look at your switch and see if terminals 3 and 5 have the factory copper strap connecting them. And please, check your switch in these other body styles and report back here on your findings. This will save everyone looking to do this a lot of headaches from Jack Daniels.
Now on with the show. And first off, make sure your battery is disconnected. You need to pull the wiring plug off the switch. You'll see a slot next to the terminal to push the wire into the wiring block from the side that plugs onto the switch.Take a stiff piece of wire , or a small screwdriver, slide it up into the slot and pop the Purple wire out of the block. This will collapse the tab that locks the terminal in the block. Pull the Purple wire out from the wiring side of the block. Then pry the lock up so it will lock in the new position. Look at your disconnected switch and you will see the Brown wire is in the #5 slot, which has the copper strap that connects it to the #3 slot which is empty. #3 is where you insert the Purple wire's terminal. Make sure it locks or you'll have no connection. And viola, you now have the headlights and parking lights connected together so they are both on at the same time. It seems GM had this all set up from the start. Then some dummy said no you can't do it. That's why the jumper was thought of but not needed. So there's no need for scotch locks or a piece of wire for the jumper. And you won't ruin your wiring. Thank ya Charles, you Old Goat... I love ya man. Charles and his wiring schematics actually made this happen. And without you this wouldn't have happened at all.

OK Gary,
I made it work 41 years ago, BUT you had to ask a simple question like "Why can't we just use this other terminal that already has a strap?" Gad I love it when people use their heads. Why I didn't look at the switch way back when, I cannot even fathom a guess! But, the bottom line is, This is the Correct way to do it WITHOUT cutting or strapping wires! Thank You Gary! Yous guys with 64's and 65's please check this out and report back here for the good of all. Charles Last edited by Old Goat 67; 01-22-2009 at 01:31 PM. |

Gary,
You'll be pleased to know that I will be taking off that soldered in strap, and putting on new connectors I got from Car Quest to move the Purple lead to Pin 3 and DOING IT RIGHT! Charles |

You guys really nailed this one once you got your heads around it, and the funny thing is it is such a simple and easy solution. Very nice piece of reference material.

Thanks "goatmanmitch",
That's precisely why it takes a team to win a game. Just quarterbacks or fullbacks cannot do it alone! Charles |

And my thanks too Mitch. You know, back in 70 with the 66 GTO and in 73 with my Tempest and it's GTO grills and parking lights, I wanted to do this but couldn't figure out what wires did what. Never thought of pulling out the switch cause I figured you had to do it up front with the lights. Duh, was I a dummy. I didn't know squat about the electrical system in a car and was scared I'd set the thing on fire. So I never thought about it again... until seeing the old thread on this subject dating back to 2007. A few PMs didn't get my mind set on the right way to do it either. But Charles got it all together on doing the jumper. I just happened to look and see that copper strap connecting the 5 and 3 terminals and asked the big question.... Why not this way Charles? Charles was the one to confirm that it would work just fine. I did the test and it sure does. LOL

NO SCOTCH LOCKS
I WOULDN'T USE SCOTCHLOCKS. I HAVE SEEN THEM FAIL MANY TIMES IN NON MOVING APPLICATIONS WHERE THERE IS NO VIBRATION. DON'T RUIN A GREAT NIGHT OUT. STRIP THE WIRES AND SOLDER THEM TOGETHER SO THEY DON'T COME APART. ITS MORE WORK BUT WELL WORTH IT.

Do yourself a favor and do not use scotch locks. I have seen them fail in situations where there is no vibration. In a car they WILL eventually fail and ruin a great night out when you have no headlights or parking lights. Strip the wires and solder them for insurance. It is a bit more work but well worth it.
