The 4.1 was only a few years because it was plain and simple a POS. There were 8 head gasket revisions by 1982 because along with poor QC, the area between the cylinders was so thin that it was very difficult to keep the seal between cylinders and they were also notorious for external oil, and coolant leaks.
1980-84 and the high cost for warranty repairs it was cut, 125 HP didn't make it the answer to replace a V8 as buick hoped it would. I worked at a buick dealer in 1982-84 I wish I had a dollar for every set of head gaskets I replaced on a 4.1. Some cars had 4-5 sets of HG replaced under warranty. |

I don't know if I posted this before here or not but if you want an easy way to swap a Pontiac engine into your car , you can just buy the front engine wire harness from one of the wire companies for the G/P with the 301 that way all you have to do is change the wire harness in the car to the 301 then you just have to wire it up as if it had the Pontiac engine in it.

My in laws actually ordered a 1982 Regal new with a 4.1 because it had more power than the 3.8 and had better fuel economy rating than the V8. They actually used it to tow a 18' boat. It had a Q jet and the 3.8 had a 2 bbl. They later ordered a 1986 Grand Prix LE with a 305 VIN H. It was much better suited to towing the boat.

Dont know previous history on mine but i stuffed a crank/bearing kit into mine when i got it last year.flickering oil light at idle.put it on the road in September, ive put about 7,000 miles on it so far.only trouble it gave me was a waterpump.its an oil burner, doesnt smoke though, runs mint with great gas mileage, only likes premium gas.its almost a shame to rip it out for the 455

I bought mine not running 2 years ago. It looks like it has not been registered since 1996. It only has 59,000 miles on it. Someone started taking the 305 apart and by the looks of it it has been partially taken apart for several years. I am going to start on the rebuild of a Pontiac 455 for it shortly.

I have done this swap 25 years ago
mounts on the chassis are different (from memory) mounting holes are different, if you look at the chassis there are a bunch of holes and pontiacs location is different than the chevys fuel line is on the wrong side ( from memory) |

this swap is really easy you will need to move the fuel lines to the other side, change the trans if its not a 2004r, use 301 motor mounts and for the exhaust go through madd dog headers he is the only one who makes headers that fit. he used my 78 gp to moc them up and make them. they fit great stay in the frame rails and you dont have to move the motor to get them in. i saw a post about the holes in the frame being wrong, that is not true the stock 301 motor mounts will bolt right in. if you have any other questions feel free to pm me i can send you pics or answer any question you have.

I'm putting a Pontiac 455 in a 78 Cutlass Supreme. Have the mounts from a 83 GP I had back in the 90s.

I did this swap a couple years back and used motor mounts (the frame should have the holes drilled) from a 79 TA as well as headers from a 79 TA fit perfect. I fabricated the gbody trans mount to accept the BOP Turbo 400, used that stock wiring harness, as well as went with the g-force upper and lower rear controller arms for the rear (upgraded the 7.5 to a 8.5/3.73 gear), this along with a set of 90/10 shocks in the front and 50/50 in the rears made the car hook...
