I'm afraid the book you have described just doesn't exist. However I'd think that the best one to start with would be the HO engine blueprint book, along with a Pontiac shop manual from the late '60s. Definitely get the Jim Hand book too, lots of good common-sense engine info in there. It really doesn't make sense to stray too far from stock for a first time build, these engines run very hard with just stock high-performance components. One can easily build an engine (455 for best performance per dollar, a 400 is great too) that will power you deep into the 12s using all stock pieces. |

I dont know why more people dont have at least a cheap manual for there car. they are only about $15.00 at any Checker, Autozone, PepBoys etc. The old MOTORS manuals going back into the 60s and 70s are easily found at used book stores, 15-20 bucks heres a bookstore that specializes in manuals for sale http://www.factoryautomanuals.com/ here is something to try: having a wiring problem with your 73 Firebird? Just type 73 Firebird wiring diagram into Google, you'll be amazed! |

I just finished Glory Days by Jim Wangers--a great book that provides an excellent description of the history of performance Pontiacs and the evolution of the GTO. It's well written with lots of old pictures, ads, etc. The parts about the birth of Royal Pontiac into high performance and descriptions of cruising on Woodward Avenue were fascinating. The politics involved among the different GM divisions was interesting as well. You'll love your Pontiac even more if you read this book.

May I also recommend
On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors By: J. Patrick Wright (and John DeLorean) ISBN 0-9603562-0-7 Avoid "1955-74 High Performance Pontiacs" by author John Smith. It was not written by anyone authoratative about Pontiacs and thus has errors.
