Peje, you could just buy a 4" rotating assembly and put it in your original 400 block to have a 428. Nothing special about the 428 block versus the 400.

Many years ago we pulled a 428 from a 69 GP it had 4 bolt mains and chrome valve covers cant recall any codes except for "428" on the block...would this have been a 370hp 428..... always wondered and this post got me thinking.

good possibility. do you remember what heads were on it? should have been 62 for the 370-390 hp versions, and I believe had long branch exhaust manifolds.
67 and 68 were 360 and 375HP?

definitely no long branch exhaust but for sure 4 bolt mains ..no idea what heads but obviously never been touched. We pulled off one cap and it had moraine bearings buttoned it back up and stuck in my 66 GTO it ran like a scalded cat compared to the tired 389 it replaced!

There are several 428's & 455's with 2 bolt mains on this site right now for sale. There are also some 428 & 455 blocks that are drilled & tapped for 4 bolt mains & you can buy the 4 bolt caps & have the blocks line honed for the 4 bolt caps & then you have a 4 bolt block. But a 428 for $1800.00 is way to much, go to teh for sale section & you will see ther are several right now for sale that are half of that price for almost complete engines. Also remember when you buy one of these blocks you will ahve at least another $ 1000.00 or more in machine works plus the new parts.

$1,500 sounds high to me. Paid $300 for an early 428 4-bolt short block with original 421 rebalanced armasteel crank. Cylinders & crank all measure std.

I have the block, crank and some other items- front cover, pan, intake etc from one of those but tossed the heads years ago. Figuring if I rebuilt it I would go for large valve heads. Wouldn't pay that much for it. Still, when the engine was in the 69 Bonneville cvt it came from, that stupid car would still chirp 2nd when it was well past the 100k mark. Probably the reason I still have it.

I believe that all the discussion is about the 428 from the Cincinnati Craigslist, not the one that you have on the listed on this board.

To me for that kind of money it would have to be a true 4 bolt block. Not just drilled. If you have a 4 bolt drilled and wanted to put 4 bolt caps on it you would have to buy the caps and then have it line bored-honed.JMO,Tom
