Here is a pic of the ground clearance with the shallow and deep pans - big difference.

Yes 4l80e cores are drying up as well. At least the ones you want.

It took me about 3 months to find a 91-96 2wd core. If you don't mind some additional tunnel modification and don't mind converting a 4wd model to 2wd, they become a lot easier to find. But your total cost goes up as a result.

I'd say yes. Will and I were talking about this a while back and those pictures I posted were the pics I sent to Will. That shallow Hughes pan is the shorter one I measured in my picture in post 17. Will was sending the deep unit back for an exchange at Hughes if I remember correctly.

Yep - as Larry mentioned this was the clearance issue he and I discussed. Hughes sent me the trans with the deep pan and later sent me the shallow pan due to the clearance issues. Of note the deep pan is more expensive and normally doesn’t come on their 750 horsepower trans but they were out of stock and didn’t want to hold up the ship date.

Would the stock 4L80 pan work just as well as the aftermarket Hughes? What’s the difference?

The Hughes pan is cast aluminum with cooling fins and its rigidity should add strength to the trans case versus a stamped steel pan. Also, it has a drain plug.
