Woe, I don't think even Wayne Carini would desire that "stuff" on a barn find.........

RAIV Engine Removal & Teardown
It's been a couple of weeks since the car was looked at, so this past weekend lots of work happened. Dan removed the ’69 WH code RAIV engine out of the ’66 GTO and tore it down. He was happy to see that it is really clean inside and not rusty from sitting the past 42 years. The engine was rebuilt sometime in the mid to late 1970’s and has some good-for-the-time .030”-over Forged-True brand pistons with full floating wrist pins. These are the pistons with the Teflon buttons in the skirts. Even more amazing is it still has the original 041 ‘T’ RAIV cam and limited travel factory lifters. Unfortunately, it’s lost a couple of lobes and the bearings show scoring from metal shavings circulating in the oil system. The 722 heads still have their original swirl polished/tuliped valves, not sure if the springs are original as there are 2 different style of retainers, factory and a couple aftermarket. The RAIV pushrods and guideplates are still present, though the #1 intake and #5 exhaust pushrods were slightly bent and the #1 exhaust pushrod guide was broken, but with a shade-tree repair to go along with the shade-tree engine rebuild.
The block, heads, and manifolds are headed out to get cleaned and magnafluxed tomorrow and hoping for a clean bill of health. The frame was torch-cut to clear the driver side RA exhaust manifold and wasn’t reinforced in any way. Lots of decisions to make in the near future about what direction to take with the engine. Forgot to mention the blocks casting date is A109 and the '68 RAII exhaust manifolds are C138 (or C188) & C218. The manifolds look crack-free to the naked eye, but magnafluxing will tell the real story.

Thanks for keeping us informed!
Man, I can’t believe that frame was not reinforced after so much was cut out!

Some lessons are hard learned, but it's a blessing in disguise I would say that the push Rods bent from what was likely valve float yet the connecting rods held in.
If not it would have been another block with a port hole in it!

John, It looks like 29xxx0765. The plant letter and first 2 digits just don't exist. The '9' for the year just barely shows as does the '0'.

Does this look to have its original timing chain and gears?

Steve25 - No, it had stock replacement steel gears and Morse chain. It was worn/loose, but not terrible.

Thanks much!
I was just curious if it still had the stock set up which I have been wondering if the IV motors with there far higher 320 psi of open pressure would have still been fitted with the Aluminum Nylon cover cam gear or not. Dennis, do you know anyone who could answer this stocker RA4 question?

The two RA-IV cars I took apart in 1970 at my Uncles dealership both had the Steel Gears, BUT they also had an aftermarket Edelbrock 4 BBL intake on one engine and the other engine obviously was a racer with Hooker Headers. So No help on that one.
They were both RA-IV SD engines. Tom V.

Have you approached PHS yet? Have they said it's enough info for an invoice?

This wasn't Ralph Pipers 66 GTO that he ran at US-131 for many years, was it?
He raced that car many times there. He was also one of the starters who worked the starting line back in the 1976 time frame. Ralph lived south west some miles from US-131 location. Tom V.

Agreed! The VIN wasn't found, not that it doesn't/didn't exist. Very few come up inconclusive, and this is one of those very few.

I do recall his wagon being 455 powered (mid-12's IIRC)...from the HO car? I think this was the later 70's when we were running our '65 428 Tempest coupe.
