hehe...this thread is kinda freaking me out.

i had a BOP seal in the old 462 with the Speed Pro rings and no leaks. there's a BOP seal in the the new 474 with the Total Seal file-to-fit rings. i've got an evac kit and relatively low compression (11.5 or 11.7:1), so hopefully it won't be a problem.

edit- i bought my seal from the Dude, so if it leaks i'm blaming Danee.

Ken you are right. This thing leaked oil so bad that you really couldn't tell where it came from. I have used several of the BOP seals and also the felpro seal and never have had a problem other than last spring, and we tried everything we could think of and Schottler said to me ( Inever liked those damn total seals anyway so lets re ring it) and we did and never had another problem. The Chevy guys are still giving me static about it.

My crank is a '67 428 Arma-steel unit, .10 /.10, polished, etc... In a 69 +.065 428 w/ Program billet center caps & factory front/rear caps.
Line bore/hone & entire recip. assy. balanced. Milodon RR pan, Spott's scraper, Canton tray, & Dyna gear pump. Nothing else has even the slight inclination of a leak.

Just a thought, Larry, but how far back does your pan scraper go?

Does it extend near the rear main seal area?

If you get the scraper to where it is pulling the oil off the crank nicely and do not have a open
area for it to dump the oil to, it will run right down the scraper and flood the seal area.

Check that out. May not be that but you never know.

That's a plausible circumstance Tom.
I'll be checking it out upon disassembly this time. But seems to me that the seal should still be designed w/ enough tension to hold back the oil flow, no?

No,the slinger ring should keep the majority of the oil from the seal. (slinger ring holes open?)

If the tray extends back enough to dump the oil behind the ring it could be too much for the seal to handle under pressure.

But if it leaked while not running like when tilting the engine back, I would say it's not conforming to the crank.

"rumair"....i have the same combination(w/total seal rings) with no evac kit and 11.5:1 comp., using the BOP seal. I'm hampered with oil leaks past the valley pan and out the dip stick tube but NO LEAKS past the BOP seal or oil pan gaskets.
Working on re-installation of the KRE valley pan now and figuring out a way to keep the dipstick in the tube.
The crankcase pressure is vented to atmosphere via K&N type breather in each valve cover.
I'll try enlarging the hole in each breather to see if that helps.

I also run a Spotts scraper but no windage tray.
Wasn't it posted at one time that if using the Canton windage tray, that a scraper was not necessary?

larry- i don't recall reading about not needing the scraper with the windage tray.

i chose to run the scraper without the windage tray to minimize possible sealing issues on the bottom end. i will also be using the spotts aluminum valley pan. i've got my dipstick tube hole plugged, so no worries there. like i said, hopefully the evac. kit (moroso kit...5/8" heater hose from breathers to collectors) will help me avoid this problem.

I'll be putting one of the BOP seals in my 73 455 soon due to it leaking (have a rope seal now). I also used the cadillac seal, but it leaked too. If my crank has been ground and polished 010 will this cause a problem? According to the shop sheet it looks like the rod and main journals have been ground.

Larry,

When you say its at the parting line, do you mean at the crank or along the cap to block surface? There is obviously something not right here. When you get it apart contact us and we can go over some measurements.

Wade, you've got mail. I've got it all tore down, cleaned, & awaiting y'alls reply to start checking dimensions.
