a rumor is floating around the office this morning (finished 4th last night). how good is the pontiac's oiling system? any improvements nessasary? needed? sugested? (you get the point)

now as far as the engine goes, tonight the crank shaft will be removed, and the 2 rods with spun bearings will be taken to the machine shop to be checked out. looking at the piston tops, they have made contact with the head but i'll look closely to see if they are damaged.

this engine will be assembled and tried on the race track, I just don't know when. (summer is just about over)

more to follow.

This weekend I will be picking up my 400 (differnt street project), so I will be in the "pontiac mood"

SDBOB, checked all my old H/O Racing High Output newsletters and found that article in the November 1974 issue. The car was owned by Jim Miller and driven by Don Gamble, they raced at least 4 times a week. They used two different engines they were changed depending on the lenght of the track. A 468" was used on the short 1/3 and 3/8 mile tracks where they needed the torque. On the bottom end of the 468" they used RA-5 rods, 73-74 SD oil pump with restricted oil system with deepened pan with remote oil filter and oil cooler. A smaller engine 440" was used to compete on the larger 1/2 mile dirt tracks. Both engines used the same top end parts, RA-5 heads, cam, and aluminum intake equipped with a 2bbl Holley (Dominator 4bbl carb sawed in half because of class rules). The top end parts were switched between short blocks depending on the track they were racing at. They used a Muncie 4-speed tranny and get this, either a 5.14 or 5.83 rear gears. Jim said that since they started using the 80 lb SD oil pump and restricted oil system, bottom end problems have been non-existent. Talk about serious racers, and this was 30 years ago.

update - the 350 pontiac has 2 spun bearings (okay, they were completely gone, rod is riding on crank approx. .188 clearance, and the rod never broke, wow)

late last week we found another 350 pontiac in the weeds at a local salvage yard, like the first engine this one is a 1973 with 46 heads, but have press-in studs (very interesting, as i have never seen these before) so this motor will be donating 2 piston and rod assemblies to the pontiac project.

the project is continuing.....

any opinions on the oiling system?

thank you for your time

There is a 2bbl intake sitting at my machine shop right now if you need one.

thank you for your offer, but we now have 2 intake manifolds for use. after flowing one intake manifold I need to search and locate some flow numbers for the #46 heads for a proper cam selection. lately i've been locating cheap parts from all over.

starting second row inside on sat.

Thanks for the e-mail my computer didn't show any e-mail so I didn't check I apologize. Good luck always liked dirt tracks just couldn't afford it, always willing to help others. I remember doing paint stripping on Don's car. Jim would build motors i n his basement. Jim worked at Pontiac dealership where He helped me order new 74SDTA. Still have it, my VIN was used to order 4 SD rods for that GTO. Another SDVIN was used to order other4 SD rods. You could only order 4 at a time.Jim used to remove dipstick tube and block holewith bolt. pans were I think stock but baffles added to keep oil from crawling sides.Take your oil pump apart even if new! I've seen garbage inside on purpose!Taylor had good article in HPPontiac couple issues ago on oil pumps. Its strange but people have to replace parts mentality but Pontiacs to me always had the right stuff engineered in to them, just needs a little massaging.Like I said before the Chebie guys don't like it much when you wup'em they are going to say your cheatin.Just smile because they are probably cheatin so you have to be right? Good luck
